Highways Lighting Operative

Energi People is looking for a Highways Lighting Operative

Job description

We’re Hiring: Highways Lighting Operative

Base Location: Slinfold

Contract: Temporary – 7 months, with potential to extend/become a permanent role

Do you want a hands-on role that genuinely makes a difference to communities every day? We’re looking for a Highways Lighting Operative to join a well-established street lighting operation responsible for over one million lights across the UK.

Our work helps towns and cities become safer, smarter, greener, and more energy efficient—and we’re proud to play a part in reducing carbon footprints nationwide. Now we need someone like you to help keep the lights on.

What you’ll be doing

As a Highways Lighting Operative, you’ll be out on the network ensuring street lighting and highway assets are safe, functional, and reliable. Your work will directly improve visibility and road safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Your day-to-day will include:

  • Inspecting, maintaining, and repairing street lighting, traffic signs, and street furniture
  • Responding quickly to lighting faults and outages
  • Diagnosing and fixing electrical issues (wiring, switches, ballasts, control systems)
  • Replacing lamps, cleaning fixtures, and repairing damaged components
  • Working with colleagues to plan repairs while minimising traffic disruption
  • Operating specialist equipment such as MEWPs and electrical testing devices
  • Recording work completed, materials used, and asset data via a handheld tablet
  • Always working safely and in line with health & safety regulations

What we’re looking for

You’ll already have experience in the electrical or construction industry, and you’ll enjoy practical, outdoor work.

Essential skills & experience:

  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving ability
  • Comfortable using a tablet or digital system for job logging
  • Great attention to detail
  • Confident using tools for digging and installing lighting columns
  • Physically fit and happy working outdoors, at height, and in all weather
  • A good communicator who works well with colleagues and the public
  • Full UK driving licence (Class 2 HGV is a bonus)

Nice to have (but not essential)

  • IPAF or PASMA certification
  • G39 Electrical Safety Training
  • Experience in public lighting, highways, or infrastructure works
  • Experience installing lighting columns and associated groundwork

Why apply?

  • Be part of work that genuinely improves communities
  • Develop specialist skills in a growing sector
  • Opportunity to extend beyond the initial contract
  • Join a supportive, safety-focused team

If you’re practical, safety-minded, and want a role where your work is visible every night—we’d love to hear from you.

Apply today and help keep our roads safely lit.
