Design Manager - MOJ Projects – Long-term freelance contract

A major Tier 1 main contractor is looking for an experienced Design Manager to support a growing pipeline of Ministry of Justice (MOJ) projects across the UK. This long‑term freelance opportunity offers the chance to work on high‑profile schemes that make a tangible impact on public infrastructure and community safety.

The Role

You’ll take ownership of design management across a range of either new build or refurbishment projects within the MOJ estate. Working closely with internal teams, consultants, and client representatives, you’ll ensure design information is coordinated, compliant, and delivered to programme.

This is a hybrid role, combining office‑based collaboration, remote working, and regular site visits.

As projects are located nationwide, a willingness to travel is essential.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the design process from pre‑construction through delivery
• Coordinate design information between consultants, subcontractors, and internal teams
• Ensure compliance with MOJ standards, security protocols, and statutory requirements
• Review drawings, specifications, and technical submissions
• Manage design risk, change control, and buildability reviews
• Attend design meetings, site inspections, and client workshops

About You

• Proven experience as a Design Manager within a Tier 1 or major contractor
• Background in MOJ, custodial, secure environments, or other complex public‑sector projects
• Strong understanding of design coordination, technical standards, and construction methodology
• Able to travel nationwide as required
• Comfortable working in a hybrid setup with both office and site presence
