Job description
Aureos are seeking a Geotechnical Drilling Supervisor to join our team. A Geotechnical Drilling Supervisor has a critical role in ensuring the effective execution of planned works on site, particularly focusing on safety, standards, and timeliness.
They may well be involved in the planning of these works but as a minimum will have been briefed on the works during a ‘whiteboard’ type briefing – normally these will be recorded.
They also play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between planning and execution, ensuring that all GI works are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.
Train and mentor upcoming drillers.

Primary tasks and duties
Site Implementation of Planned Works:
- Execution: Ensure that works planned by office-based staff are carried out effectively on-site.
- Briefings: Attend and understand briefings, often conducted in a ‘whiteboard’ style, which are recorded for reference.
- You would normally brief out the task brief/method statement to the works team and ensure everyone understands the works and safety systems put in place to undertake the works.
- Ensure anyone who enters your work area is known to you and briefed of any risks and signed in if staying with your group.
Safety Management:
- Compliance: Ensure all activities comply with relevant safety legislation.
- Safety Standards: Maintain high safety standards on-site.
- Risk Mitigation: Identify and mitigate potential risks during implementation.
- You will ensure you understand the safety requirements of the site you’re a working on and that all of your team also understand them. You will need to enforce these and prevent anyone from breaching these requirements.
- Undertake regular safety inspections of the site as directed, have stop 5 sessions on shifts to allow people to raise issues and to discuss any close calls observed before they are reported.
Quality Control:
- Standards: Ensure that all works are completed to the required quality.
- Inspections: Conduct regular inspections to verify compliance with specifications and standards.
- Responsible for ensuring the works are undertaken to the required standard, any issues or non-conformances to be documented.
- Ensure with any engineering resource on the site that all QCS paperwork is completed on the shift usually via Helix.
Supervision and Team Management:
- Task Delegation: Assign duties and tasks to team members clearly and effectively.
- Understanding: Ensure that all personnel understand their roles and responsibilities.
- Training: Ensure all team members have the required training and experience for the tasks you are assigning to them.
- This includes checking the draft roster and raising any concerns over the capabilities of the staff provisionally allocated to the tasks you are to supervise.
Coordination and Communication:
- Liaison: Act as a link between office-based planning staff and site workers.
- Reporting: Provide updates and reports on progress, challenges, and outcomes.
- Briefings: Conduct site briefings and ensure information is disseminated accurately.
- You should have good communication with the team members and ensure others who are required to undertake briefings do so to your satisfaction. This includes POS, isolation, test before touch etc.
Production Management:
- Activity Direction: Manage, control, and direct all production activities
- Efficiency: Ensure work is carried out in the most cost-effective manner.
- Resource Management: Efficiently use resources, including labour, equipment, and materials.
- Making the best use of the resource allocated to you, reporting back any issues that have arisen.
Timeliness:
- Deadlines: Ensure projects are completed within set timeframes.
- Schedule Management: Maintain and adjust schedules as necessary to meet deadlines.
- If you feel a possession overrun may occur inform the relevant people within the company / project. Sort out any hours exceedances as required.
Risk Management:
- Issues Resolution: Quickly identify and resolve issues that arise during implementation.
- Proactive Approach: Take a proactive approach to potential problems, preventing delays or safety hazards.
- Undertake regular safety inspections of the site as directed, have stop 5 sessions on shifts to allow people to raise issues and to discuss any close calls observed before they are reported.
Compliance and Contract Specifications:
- Adherence: Ensure that all work adheres to contract specifications.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records and documentation for compliance verification.
- Ensuring the reports are submitted fully completed with photographs as required via the Helix system.
Secondary tasks and duties:
When accidents / incidents occur that require investigation you will need to be able to record the details of what has happened, report the incident as the company and project require and liaise with on call / incident support as required.
When driving a company vehicle ensure that you do so carefully and safely, being courteous and aware of other road users and ensuring that you comply with all Speed limits and follow all road traffic legislation.
To maintain the competencies that you have been trained in and to undertake all required assessments and where necessary retests to maintain these competencies.
Typical Workflow
- Pre-Implementation:
- Receive and review the work plan.
- Attend and participate in briefings.
- Prepare the site and resources.
- Implementation:
- Supervise the team and delegate tasks.
- Monitor the progress of the work.
- Ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Post-Implementation:
- Conduct final inspections.
- Complete necessary documentation.
- Provide feedback and reports to the planning team.
Qualifications and Training
Essential:
- NVQ Level 2 in Land Drilling
- Leadership Course
- SSSTS
- Driving Licence
- Knowledge and understanding of Rail Infrastructure Safety requirements and safety principles
- Extensive experience in the ground investigation industry
- Good communication skills both written and verbal
- Skilled leader and controller of labour and resources within a safety critical environment
- Ability to use On-Trac
- Ability to write reports using HELIX
- Use KRONOS for time management / Fatigue monitoring
Desirable:
- SMSTS Knowledge
- Ability to lead and motivate teams to achieve objectives and targets
- Skilled leader and controller of labour and resources within a safety critical environment
- In-depth knowledge of all aspects of GI
- Experience of leading teams in safety critical environments
- Experienced in on site problem solving to deliver a safe the relevant work to NR standards
