Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and independent compliance professional to act as our Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP). This role is responsible for overseeing the firm’s compliance with the SRA Principles and the SRA Code of Conduct, embedding a strong culture of ethical practice, and ensuring that regulatory risks are identified, managed, and appropriately reported.
The COLP will operate with sufficient authority and independence to challenge senior management where necessary and will have full access to relevant information to discharge the role effectively.
Key Responsibilities:
- Overseeing the firm’s compliance with the SRA Principles, SRA Code of Conduct, and other applicable regulatory obligations.
- Establishing, maintaining, and reviewing systems and controls to ensure ongoing regulatory compliance.
- Maintaining a breach register, assessing materiality, and reporting material breaches to the SRA in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Monitoring regulatory developments and advising the firm on changes affecting legal practice and professional conduct.
- Supporting the development, implementation, and review of compliance policies, procedures, and risk management frameworks.
- Conducting periodic compliance reviews, audits, and risk assessments, and making recommendations to mitigate identified risks.
- Providing guidance and training to partners, managers, and staff on ethical and regulatory obligations.
- Providing oversight and assurance in relation to client onboarding, complaints handling, conflicts, supervision, and other compliance-critical processes.
- Reporting regularly to senior management on compliance matters, trends, and emerging risks.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 5 years proven experience in a compliance-related role within a legal environment.
- Strong working knowledge of the SRA regulatory framework, including the Principles and Code of Conduct.
- Exceptional research, drafting, and analytical skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- A specialism in dispute resolution, public international law, and/or human rights is highly appreciated as in line with the firm’s core practice areas.
