Lead Design Engineer – Overhead Lines (OHL)

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Lead Design Engineer – Overhead Lines (OHL) to play a key technical leadership role within a growing Power & Energy team. You will support the delivery of high-profile transmission and energy infrastructure projects across the UK and Europe, contributing directly to the energy transition.
Projects span HV/EHV Overhead Lines, substations (AIS/GIS), HVDC interconnectors, and energy storage systems, with opportunities to work across the full project lifecycle from FEED through to detailed design and construction support.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as technical lead for FEED and detailed design of OHL schemes across all voltage levels
- Lead and manage HV/EHV Overhead Line designs through all project stages (up to 400kV)
- Deliver routing, system development, retrofitting, and modification works (11kV–400kV)
- Ensure designs are reviewed, approved, and compliant with best practice and legislation
- Apply strong knowledge of UK HSE, CDM regulations, and risk management
- Use industry-standard tools including PLS-CADD and CAD packages
- Provide technical support during construction and resolve site-related issues
- Collaborate with environmental, planning, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver sustainable designs
- Support team growth, mentoring engineers and improving design processes
- Ensure drawings and specifications are accurate, complete, and construction-ready
- Maintain strong customer focus and contribute to business development activities
Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
- Chartered Engineer (IET) or working towards chartership
- HNC/HND candidates with strong relevant experience will also be considered
- Membership of a recognised professional institution
- CDAE and TP141 authorisation preferred
Skills & Experience
- Proven OHL design experience (132kV–400kV) within UK transmission/distribution
- Strong knowledge of National Grid and DNO standards
- Experience with underground-to-overhead transitions and HV cabling interfaces
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver under pressure
- Demonstrated leadership of technical workstreams and project delivery
