Mechanical Design Engineer

Full-Time | Office-Based (5 Days Per Week)
Salary: Up to £69,000 DOE
About the Role
My client is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their established Edinburgh-based design team due to continued growth.
This is a predominantly office-based role (5 days per week), where you will be responsible for developing and delivering detailed mechanical designs to support safe, compliant, and high-quality installations across a range of construction projects.
You will play a key role in coordinating mechanical services design from concept through to detailed stage, ensuring compliance with current regulations and project delivery deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- Designing in accordance with fire strategy reports, local building regulations and planning authority requirements
- Attending and contributing to design team meetings
- Carrying out site surveys of existing installations where required
- Producing heating and cooling load calculations (thermal modelling) and ventilation calculations using industry software
- Sizing and selection of AHUs, FCUs, extract fans, pumps, chillers, ASHPs, boilers, plate heat exchangers and associated plant
- Producing above-ground drainage calculations and system sizing
- Sizing and selection of domestic hot and cold-water equipment (heaters, storage tanks, etc.)
- Producing pipework and ductwork sizing calculations using recognised software or spreadsheets
- Sizing and selection of firefighting sprinkler and pumping systems (preferred but not essential)
- Producing stage reports and technical presentations
- Preparing Designer’s Risk Assessments and Mitigation Reports
- Detailing mechanical layouts and schematics for construction
- Ensuring designs meet programme and project deadlines
- Producing detailed design and survey reports
Requirements
- Extensive experience in Mechanical Building Services within the construction sector
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent qualification)
- Strong knowledge of CIBSE guidance and UK/European standards (BS, EN, IEC, etc.)
- Working knowledge of design software such as Hevacomp, Carrier HAP, CyMap, IES or TAS
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, evolving project environment
- Strong communication and coordination skills
