Civil & Commercial Litigation Case Handler (Senior Paralegal) - Birmingham

Witan Solicitors is looking for a Civil & Commercial Litigation Case Handler (Senior Paralegal) - Birmingham

Job description

The Firm

Witan Solicitors is a specialist litigation firm based in Birmingham. We handle complex, high-value disputes across civil litigation, commercial law, insolvency, employment and family law often in the High Court. We’re a small, focused team, so everyone is hands-on and close to the work.

The Role

We’re hiring a Civil & Commercial Litigation Case Handler (Senior Paralegal) to strengthen our litigation delivery team. This is a high-responsibility role for someone who can run matters day-to-day (with appropriate supervision), progress files quickly, and produce strong drafting under the Civil Procedure Rules.

This is bespoke, multi-track civil/commercial litigation. It is not a high-volume, template-driven claims environment. You will be expected to use initiative, take ownership, and add value fast.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a caseload of civil and commercial litigation matters (with supervision appropriate to experience)
  • Draft high-quality correspondence, advice notes, research memos and procedural documents
  • Work confidently with CPR: deadlines, directions, compliance, and applications support
  • Assist with (and where capable, draft) pleadings and application documents (Particulars/Defence, witness evidence, exhibits)
  • Prepare court bundles, chronologies, and disclosure workflows
  • Maintain excellent file hygiene: deadlines, case plans, and next-step actions
  • Identify and execute billing points consistently (WIP → bills → cash discipline)
  • Support and guide junior paralegals/trainees with litigation tasks and workflow
  • Contribute to improving templates, checklists, and “how we do it at Witan” processes

What We’re Looking For

We cannot offer a “learning from zero” environment. You should already have:

  • Proven experience as a paralegal/case handler in civil/commercial litigation
  • Working familiarity with CPR and litigation process from start to finish
  • Strong drafting ability (bespoke correspondence, procedural steps, structured advice)
  • Confidence managing deadlines and progressing multiple matters at pace
  • High attention to detail and pride in quality
  • Professional client communication and calmness under pressure
  • Proficiency with Word/Outlook and comfort using case management systems

Education / Training (Preferred)

This role is open to strong candidates from different routes. The following is welcomed (but not required if you have the right experience):

  • Law degree (LLB or equivalent)
  • LPC / SQE1 / SQE2 / BPTC (or equivalent)
  • Candidates on a route to qualification or pupillage are welcome provided you can demonstrate real civil/commercial litigation capability and strong drafting skills.

Traits That Matter Here
  • Self-motivated and accountable (no micromanagement)
  • Proactive and solutions-focused (you bring recommendations, not just problems)
  • Organised, resilient, and commercially aware
  • Team-first mindset aligned with our values: positivity, respect, communication, professionalism

Benefits
  • Competitive salary (DOE)
  • 30 days’ annual leave including Bank Holidays
  • High-quality litigation exposure and real responsibility
  • Clear progression for strong performers
  • Supportive, high-standard team with structured supervision
  • Opportunity to help build and shape how the litigation team runs
