Job description
Travelling Business Development Manager (Contract)
Hayward Miller | Remote (UK-based) | Contract
About the Role
We're looking for an experienced Business Development Manager on a 6 to 12 month contract, representing one of our clients in the medical and life sciences courier sector.
This is a field-based role that evolves as it goes. Early on, you'll be doing outreach to existing and dormant customers by phone and email, getting conversations going and booking site visits. As things build, the focus shifts to face-to-face meetings at universities, hospitals, biotech companies, research centres and similar institutions across the UK. At peak, we're looking for 20+ face-to-face meetings a month. From month six, you'll start handing relationships over to the client's internal team, with the role winding down through to month twelve.
Travel is national, with most sites within the UK's university triangle and some as far as Edinburgh. You'll need to think logistically about grouping visits and planning routes as the number of meetings builds.
You won't be on your own. There's a core office-based team at Hayward Miller supporting you throughout, and you'll visit the client's offices for training and onboarding. You represent Hayward Miller to the client at all times.
What the Day-to-Day Looks Like
- Phone and email outreach to existing and dormant customers to get conversations started and book visits
- Face-to-face meetings and facility walkabouts at universities, medical organisations, biotechs and research institutions
- Detailed notes in Salesforce after every meeting, capturing observations and insight from each visit
- Regular feedback to the Hayward Miller team, with a monthly overview of all activity
- Planning travel efficiently, grouping visits by region where possible
- Working with both the Hayward Miller team and the client's internal team to hand over contacts and improve customer retention
What We're Looking For
- Experience in a travelling or field-based BD or sales role
- Organised and reliable, with the ability to think critically about logistics. There's a lot of travel in this role and it needs to be planned well
- Good with people at all levels. You'll be meeting contacts face to face across a range of institutions, so being comfortable in conversation and picking up on what matters is important
- Comfortable with CRM systems. Salesforce experience is a plus
- Thorough with notes and reporting. We need useful write-ups after meetings, not just boxes ticked
- Own car, phone and laptop essential
What's on Offer
- Competitive day rate plus fuel and expenses
- UK remote when not travelling. London or Cambridge based would be ideal but not essential
- The sites you'll visit are genuinely interesting: research institutions, hospitals, biotech firms and universities
- A 6 to 12 month contract with the possibility of further work on other client projects based on performance
Start Date
Mid-April 2026. We're looking to have someone confirmed before April, so if you're interested, don't hang about.
