The Opportunity:


I’m delighted to be supporting my client, an established engineering and technology business, in their search for an experienced Business Development Manager to help grow their presence across the UK and international defence markets. If you enjoy building relationships, understanding client challenges, and working collaboratively to shape the right solutions, this could be a great next step.


Role Profile:


This role is all about developing a strong understanding of customer needs, spotting new opportunities, and working closely with internal teams to shape effective solutions. You’ll spend your time engaging with customers, partners, and internal stakeholders to support ongoing growth and help guide the future direction of the business.


It’s a great fit for someone who enjoys variety, is comfortable working with a degree of autonomy, and can confidently guide conversations from early engagement through to contract negotiation.


Key Responsibilities


  • Build a deep understanding of defence markets, customer requirements, and competitor activity.
  • Identify, develop, and secure new business opportunities in the UK and internationally.
  • Work closely with internal teams to design and present compelling, value‑led solutions.
  • Lead the full sales cycle, including bids, proposals, and contract discussions.
  • Maintain accurate sales forecasts, reporting, and an up-to-date opportunity pipeline.
  • Support product and capability development by sharing market insight and customer feedback.
  • Represent the organisation at exhibitions, events, and customer meetings.
  • Build strong, long-term relationships with clients and partners.


Experience / Skills


  • Broad experience within the defence sector and a solid understanding of market programmes and trends.
  • Successful track record of winning complex, solution-based deals.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and negotiation skills.
  • Commercial awareness, including the ability to estimate financial impact and prepare quotations.
  • Ability to work well with technical and operational teams to shape solutions.
  • Degree-level education is desirable but not essential.
