Transport Planner


Job Summary

The Transport Planner is responsible for planning and controlling a dedicated fleet of approximately 15–20 vehicles, ensuring safe, compliant, and cost-effective transport operations. The role includes day-to-day responsibility for driver costs and performance KPIs, while delivering high service levels and efficient vehicle utilisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage daily and weekly transport activity for a fleet of 15–20 trucks
  • Allocate vehicles and drivers to maximise utilisation and meet customer requirements
  • Take ownership of assigned drivers, including day-to-day coordination and support
  • Monitor and control driver-related costs (overtime, waiting time, inefficiencies)
  • Ensure all planned movements comply with transport regulations and company procedures
  • Monitor live operations and re-plan in response to delays, breakdowns, or short-notice changes
  • Communicate clearly with drivers, operations, customers, and the planning team
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date information within transport management systems
  • Escalate service, cost, or compliance risks to the Planning Supervisor as required

Performance & KPIs

Accountable for performance across the allocated fleet, including:

  • OTD (On Time Delivery)
  • Vehicle utilisation and reduction of empty running
  • Driver cost control (overtime, waiting time, inefficiencies)
  • Compliance with ADR, driver hours, and company standards
  • Service failures, delays, and cost variances

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all transport plans meet health, safety, and compliance requirements
  • Escalate any safety or compliance concerns immediately
  • Support audits, investigations, and continuous improvement activity

Skills & Experience

  • Experience in UK transport planning or logistics operations
  • Confident managing a dedicated fleet and driver group
  • Strong commercial awareness with a focus on cost control
  • Ability to prioritise and make decisions in a fast-moving environment
  • Good IT skills, including transport systems and Microsoft Office
  • Clear communicator with drivers and operational stakeholders

Working Conditions

  • Full-time, depot-based role
  • Shift work and flexibility may be required to support operations
