Job description

The Data Governance Manager is responsible for defining and embedding data governance and data protection standards across the organization.


This role focuses on governance frameworks, policies, and oversight, while working closely with data stewards, engineering, and business teams to support effective implementation and continuous improvement.


This is a hands-on role within a developing data function, suited to someone comfortable working in a pragmatic and evolving environment.


Key Responsibilities

Data Governance

• Define and maintain data governance frameworks, policies, and standards

• Support the establishment of data ownership and accountability models

• Contribute to governance forums, ensuring alignment across business and technology teams

• Promote consistent adoption of governance practices across the organization

Data Protection (Non-DPO Role)

• Support the organization’s data protection activities, ensuring alignment with applicable regulations (e.g. GDPR)

• Maintain data protection policies, standards, and procedures

• Coordinate Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs)

• Provide guidance to the business on data handling and privacy-by-design principles

• Work with legal or external advisors on complex or regulatory matters

Note: This role does not act as a formally designated Data Protection Officer.

Data Quality

• Define data quality standards, metrics, and KPIs

• Support monitoring and reporting of data quality performance

• Work with data stewards and engineering teams to prioritize and address data quality issues

• Contribute to continuous improvement of data quality processes

Data Stewardship Leadership

• Provide leadership and direction to the data stewardship function

• Work with a Stewardship Team Leader (to be appointed) to manage day-to-day stewardship activities and operations

• Define priorities, standards, and performance expectations for data stewardship

• Ensure alignment between governance objectives and stewardship execution

Data Stewardship & Delivery Coordination

• Work closely with the data stewardship team to prioritize and coordinate data quality improvements

• Provide guidance and oversight to stewardship activities

• Support resolution of key data issues in collaboration with stewards

Tools & Implementation

• Support governance use cases within tools such as Talend

• Work with engineering and stewardship teams to implement governance controls and workflows

Stakeholder Engagement

• Partner with business, technology, legal, and compliance teams

• Provide practical guidance on governance and data protection matters, including support on supplier and customer data considerations

• Promote a culture of data accountability and good data practices


Skills & Experience

• 4–7 years’ experience in data governance, data quality, or related data roles

• Strong understanding of data governance principles and frameworks

• Good working knowledge of data protection concepts (e.g. GDPR)

• Experience working with data tools (e.g. Talend, Collibra, Informatica or similar)

• Ability to translate governance and regulatory requirements into practical processes

• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills

• Pragmatic, hands-on approach to problem solving


Desirable:

• Relevant data protection qualification (e.g. CIPP/E, CIPM, or equivalent), or working towards one

• Willingness to undertake professional certification in data protection or governance (supported by the company)
