Job overviewThis training is for a nurse with relevant qualifications to undertake the SCPHN training in order to become a health visitor. It involves undertaking the SCHPN course at Brunel University London for the academic side of the course and you will be gaining your clinical experience with Hillingdon 0‐19 Service where you will have a supervisor and an assessor.

You will be given a fixed‐term one‐year full‐time contract to undertake a PGDip Specialist Community Public Health Nurse course (Health Visiting or School Nurse) starting in September 2026 at Brunel University. Sponsorship will be paid at band 5 salary. The course is funded by the HEE.
Successful completion of the course will lead to registration on Part 3 of the NMC register, an NMC recordable qualification, and eligibility to apply for a post as a Health Visitor.
Main duties of the jobThe student post is a development post, building on existing knowledge, skills and competencies to achieve a higher level of practice resulting in an academic qualification as well as a registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
You will work closely with the people who use our services, their families, friends and carers and influence how people experience our services. Nurses are expected to be kind, responsive and professional, and contribute to the quality of the services we provide by:
keeping the people who use our services as safe as possible through sound clinical skills
ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes by utilising evidence‐based policies and procedures

Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesYour timetable for the year will be provided by the university and will demonstrate all the relevant information needed to complete your course. It will also include your clinical days/periods so you can not only gain knowledge about health visiting or school nursing in our service, but which is enhanced by our clinical staff who will support you in gaining the experience and knowledge to enhance your clinical skills. You will also have details of all the required assessments for the year.
You will start off as supernumerary, observing your supervisor and other members of the team, but will gradually build up your skills in order to do the work which health visitors do independently. As a student health visitor or school nurse, you will be involved in the Healthy Child Programme, this will be achieved through group work, developmental reviews, health promotion sessions, school visits and home visits, to name a few. These may be face‐face or virtual but you will be supported throughout in order to gain the confidence needed to support families. You will also gain knowledge and experience in safeguarding and child protection which is another important part of our role.
Person specificationEducation and Qualifications
Current NMC Registration for nursing or midwifery, or evidence of application for NMC registration and confirmed NMC registration within 2 months of the start date
DipHE (or above) qualification equivalent to 120 credits at level 5 (of the Higher Education Credit Framework for England) or evidence of previous education and learning to this level.
Evidence of continual professional development at level 6
Degree or equivalent level
Experience
Experience of working within multi‐disciplinary teams

Experience of managing staff within a team, evidence of working without direct supervision and managing own workload
