Arbtech

Who we are

We are Arbtech. Our team of over 100 passionate professionals supports more than 8,000 projects each year, offering a range of environmental services. Our ecology consultancy division is overseen by a team of principal ecologists, each with their own specialisms: BNG, herpetofauna, bats, PEA, HRA, and River Condition Assessment. Whether your strengths overlap with these specialisms or they represent gaps in your skills and a training opportunity, if you're a committed ecologist and great fun to be around then we want to hear from you.

Part of the Celnor Group

Celnor Group is a UK-based environmental services group operating across the Testing, Inspection, Certification and Compliance (TICC) landscape. With a growing portfolio of specialist businesses, Celnor provides essential services that protect people, property and the environment.

While each business retains its own identity, culture and technical specialism, all are supported by a central group function that invests in people, systems and long‐term sustainable growth.

Job details

This role is central to the day‐to‐day success of the business and contributes directly to operational performance and customer outcomes. As an Ecology Summer Intern, you will be responsible for delivering bat emergence and re‐entry surveys (BERS) and preparing reports for our clients, working closely with colleagues across the business to ensure high standards of delivery, compliance and continuous improvement.

This is a hands‐on and self‐starting role suited to someone who thrives in a fast‐paced environment and enjoys taking ownership, solving problems and making a tangible impact.

What you will do

The role will predominately comprise conducting bat emergence/re‐entry surveys, so most of your time will be taken up surveying. Please note, these surveys take place at dusk (and occasionally dawn), so your hours will not be 9‐5. You will be required to work unsociable hours and expected to flexibly manage your time for admin work. You will typically be asked to do 4-5 BERS a week (the majority of which will be dusk surveys).

Your non‐survey time will be spent carrying out analysis of data from the previous night's survey (including bat calls), report writing, mapping and project admin (i.e. Client communication, updating systems).

There will be opportunity to undertake additional training and shadowing experienced ecologists on other survey types, such as Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Preliminary Roost Assessments and other protected species surveys. This will however depend on your BERS workload, as surveying will take priority over the summer.

You will need travel to site so will need your own (reliable) form of transport. We pay 45p per mile to reimburse you for travel costs (and 10p more if you ride share).

Work will be allocated based on your location. We will always try to ensure your work is within a 2 and a half hour travelling radius. However, on occasion we may ask you to travel further, in which you will be expected to stay over. All costs related to staying over will be covered by the company.

BERS surveys (which will make up a significant proportion of your working week) take place peri‐dusk and less frequently, pre‐dawn. This isn't compatible with having a second job.
