Job OverviewStudent Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (School Nurse) Band 5

The post of Student Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (School Nurse) is a development post building on existing knowledge, skills and competencies to achieve a higher level of practice resulting in an academic qualification as well as a registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

We have one (1) position each at Camden (NW5 4RA) and Westminster (W1B 5NA).

Main duties of the jobThis is an opportunity for qualified NMC registered nurses to apply for the SCPHN course for School Nursing commencing in September 2026 at King's College London. It is a fully funded training programme that will qualify you as a registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (School Nurse). You will receive a fixed‐term one‐year full‐time contract to undertake the PGDip Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (School Nursing) course.

Detailed Job Description And Main ResponsibilitiesPatient Safety

Use clinical judgement and risk assessments to keep service users as safe as possible.

Safeguard people by recognising and responding to abuse risks, recognising own limits and escalating concerns when necessary.

Act as an effective advocate for those who use our services, including escalating safety concerns.

Operate openly and transparently about practice.

Supervise the work of others.

Reflect on everyday practice to identify areas for safety or quality improvement.

Work with others to create a culture of continuous improvement.

Maintain accurate, legible, comprehensive records.

Maintain compliance with mandatory training requirements.

Person specificationEducation

Current NMC Registration for nursing or midwifery.

Evidence of application for NMC registration and confirmed registration within two months of the start date.

Degree or DipHE (or above) equivalent to 120 credits at level 5 with evidence of continual professional development at level 6.

Literacy and numeracy at Level 3–4 for literacy (A level equivalent) and Level 1–2 for numeracy (GCSE equivalent).

Experience

Experience working within multi‐disciplinary teams.

Evidence of involvement in managing difficult situations and conflict resolution.

Experience managing staff within a team.

Evidence of working without direct supervision and managing own workload.

Desirable: Experience working with children and families.

Desirable: Experience working in the community.

Desirable: Nursing/midwifery post‐registration experience.

Skills

Academic ability to study independently at degree or postgraduate level.

Good computer literacy skills (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel).

Excellent, adaptable verbal and written communication skills.

Numeracy and literacy skills.

Ability to support children and families to make informed decisions about health and well‐being.

Ability to adapt to a changing environment.

Knowledge of research‐based practice.

Demonstrated commitment to equality and valuing diversity in practice.

Desirable: Knowledge of the public health role of contemporary health visiting and community settings.

Desirable: Knowledge of local and national policies influencing health visiting.

Desirable: Current knowledge of safeguarding issues.

Desirable: Knowledge of quality issues, audit processes and clinical governance.

Other

The ability to travel to a variety of sites within the Trust is essential.
