Job OverviewStudent Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) - Health Visitor

CNWL NHS Foundation Trust (Camden) offers an opportunity to undertake the SCPHN Health Visiting course, a joint programme with Kings College London, split between clinical practice and university attendance. This is an exciting time for health visiting, developing services to meet the needs of a diverse population. We work as an integrated service with the London Borough of Camden to support the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme to families in Camden. Applicants must be registered nurses/midwives, current registration, and interested in addressing the health needs of children and families. The course is at Level 7 (Master's Degree). Courses commence in September 2026 and are offered on a full‐time basis. Applicants must be able to use public transport to travel to and from work and during their working day.

You will be offered a fixed‐term one year full‐time contract to undertake a PGDip Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visiting) course at Kings College London University. Sponsorship will be paid at a Band 5 salary. The course commences September 2026 to be completed by September 2027, consisting of 50% academic study and 50% in practice. Practice placements will be situated across Camden. This is a development post, building on existing knowledge, skills and competencies to achieve a higher level of practice and an academic qualification, with a recordable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

These are fully funded training opportunities, subject to funding from Health Education England, to qualify as a registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor) and are open to all qualified Nurses and Midwives.

Detailed Job Description and Main ResponsibilitiesStudent Health Visitors contribute to the provision of safe and reliable services by:

Using their clinical judgement and risk assessments to keep the people using our services as safe as possible

Safeguarding people by recognising and responding when an adult or child might be at risk from abuse, recognising their own limits and asking for help and escalating concerns when necessary

Escalating safety concerns and acting as effective advocates for those who use our services

Being open and transparent about their own practice

Supervising the work of others

Reflecting on everyday practice to identify areas where improvements in safety or quality can be made

Working with others to create a culture of continuous improvement

Maintaining accurate, legible, comprehensive records

Maintaining compliance with their mandatory training requirements

Person SpecificationEducation and QualificationsEssential criteria:

Current NMC Registration for nursing or midwifery: adult nurse, children's nurse, mental health nurse, learning disability nurse or midwife

Evidence of recent continual professional development

Able to meet university requirements for the SCPHN Course

Desirable criteria:

B.S.C. 2:1 or above

ExperienceEssential criteria:

Evidence of working without direct supervision and managing own workload

Evidence of working effectively within a team

Experience of working within multi‐disciplinary teams

Evidence of working without direct supervision and managing own workload

Evidence of involvement in the management of difficult situations and conflict resolution

Desirable criteria:

Post registration experience

Experience of working in the community

Experience of working with children and families

Experience of managing staff within a team

Knowledge, skills and abilitiesEssential criteria:

Good understanding of the public health agenda and recent policy developments

Good understanding of the role of the SCPHN Health Visitor and the Healthy Child Programme

Current knowledge of safeguarding issues

Demonstrates a passion for working with children and families in the community

Academic ability to study independently at postgraduate level

Understanding of the range of health needs and lifestyles of different client groups

Good computer literacy skills e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel

Excellent, adaptable communication skills both written and verbal

Demonstrates ability to adapt to working within a changing environment

Evidence of supporting equality and valuing diversity in own practice

Ability to demonstrate evidence‐based practice and use of research

Desirable criteria:

Ability to support children and families to make informed decisions in relation to their health and well‐being

Ability to demonstrate good leadership skills

Knowledge of quality issues, the audit process and clinical governance
