Student Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (School Nurse)The closing date is 29 March 2026
This training is for a nurse with relevant qualifications to undertake the SCPHN training in order to become a School Nurse. It involves undertaking the SCHPN course at Brunel University London for the academic side of the course and you will be gaining your clinical experience with either Harrow or Hillingdon 0-19 Service (school nursing) where you will have a supervisor and an assessor.

You will be given a fixed term one-year full-time contract to undertake a PGDip Specialist Community Public Health Nurse course (School Nursing) starting in September 2026 at Brunel University. Sponsorship will be paid at band 5 salary. The course is funded by the HEE.
Successful completion of the course will lead to registration on Part 3 of the NMC register, an NMC recordable qualification, and eligibility to apply for a post as a School Nurse.
Main duties of the jobThe post of Student School Nurse (SN) is a development post, building on existing knowledge, skills and competencies to achieve a higher level of practice resulting in an academic qualification as well as a registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
You will work closely with the people who use our services, their families, friends and carers and influence how people experience our services. Nurses are expected to be kind, responsive and professional, and contribute to the quality of the services we provide by:
keeping the people who use our services as safe as possible through sound clinical skills
ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes by utilising evidence-based policies and procedures
ensuring the people using our services have a good experience by respecting, empowering and working in partnership throughout the care planning process

Job responsibilitiesYour timetable for the year will be provided by the university and will demonstrate all the relevant information needed to complete your course. It will also include your clinical days/periods so you can not only gain knowledge about health visiting in our services but which is enhanced by our clinical staff who will support you in gaining the experience and knowledge to enhance your clinical skills. You will also have details of all the required assessments for the year.
You will start off as supernumerary, observing your supervisor and other members of the team, but will gradually build up your skills in order to do the work which school nurses do independently. As a student school nurse, you will be involved in the Healthy Child Programme. You will also gain knowledge and experience in safeguarding and child protection which is another important part of our role.
Person SpecificationEducation and Qualifications
Current NMC Registration for nursing or midwifery or Evidence of application for NMC registration and confirmed NMC registration within 2 months of the start date
Able to meet university requirements for the SCPHN Course
Evidence of recent continual professional development
BSc 2.2 degree level or above (Level 6)
Experience
Experience of working without direct supervision and managing own workload
Evidence of working effectively within a team
Experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams
Experience of working in the community
Experience of working with children and families
Experience of managing staff within a team
Knowledge and Skills
Excellent, adaptable communication skills both written and verbal
Ability to demonstrate evidence-based practice and use of research
Good understanding of the public health agenda and recent policy developments
Demonstrate ability to adapt to working within a changing environment
Evidence of supporting equality and valuing diversity in own practice
Good understanding of the role of the SCPHN school nurse and the healthy child programme
Demonstrate a passion for working with children and families in the community
Academic ability to study independently at postgraduate level
Current knowledge of safeguarding issues
Understanding of the range of health needs and lifestyles of different client groups
Knowledge of quality issues, the audit process and clinical governance
Abilty to support children and families to make informed decisions in relation to their health and well-being
Ability to demonstrate good leadership skills

The ability to travel to a variety of sites within the Trust is essential
