Principal Development Management Officer – Major Applications

(Hybrid | Initial 3-Month Contract)

Pay Rates: £22.40 per hr. PAYE / £27.96 per hr. Umbrella

We are currently seeking an experienced Principal Development Management Officer to join a forward-thinking local authority within a dynamic Economy and Growth division.

This is a senior-level opportunity for a planning professional who can lead on complex, high-profile planning applications and play a key role in delivering sustainable growth aligned with strategic development plans.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the assessment and determination of major and complex planning applications
  • Provide expert planning advice across a wide range of areas including residential, commercial, infrastructure, and environmental developments
  • Support and guide the Development Management team to ensure effective service delivery
  • Represent the authority at public inquiries, hearings, and planning committees
  • Engage with developers, stakeholders, and the wider community to support planning outcomes
  • Prepare detailed reports, recommendations, and planning decisions
  • Contribute to the delivery of local plans and strategic growth objectives

Key Requirements:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Town Planning or a related discipline
  • Membership of (or eligibility for) the RTPI
  • Strong experience within a Local Authority Development Management team
  • In-depth knowledge of planning legislation, policies, and procedures
  • Proven experience handling major and complex applications
  • Strong report writing, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and influence others effectively

Working Arrangement:

  • Hybrid working (office, home, and site visits)
  • Flexibility required, including occasional work outside normal hours
  • Significant involvement in site visits and stakeholder meetings
