Operations Manager

Barrington James is looking for a Operations Manager

Job description

We’re Hiring: Operations Manager (Hands-On Manufacturing Leadership)

Essex / Hertfordshire (split-site role)

I’m currently supporting an innovative, growing engineering and manufacturing business who are looking to bring in a hands-on Operations Manager to oversee production across two UK sites.

This is a key hire for the business, working closely with the Managing Director and taking ownership of day-to-day operations, with real influence across production, quality, and overall business performance.

This is not a corporate role, we’re looking for someone who has come from the shop floor and enjoys being close to the detail.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee manufacturing operations across two sites
  • Lead production planning, ensuring on-time delivery and high-quality output
  • Drive continuous improvement across processes, workflow, and efficiency
  • Manage stock control, supply chain coordination, and operational KPIs
  • Work closely with quality to maintain and improve QMS and compliance standards
  • Lead, coach, and develop a small, close-knit team
  • Support broader business decisions including budgeting, investment, and planning

✅ What We’re Looking For:

  • Proven experience in a hands-on operations / production / manufacturing leadership role
  • Background in engineering or machining (CNC, precision engineering, or similar highly desirable)
  • Experience working within SME environments (comfortable wearing multiple hats)
  • Strong understanding of workshop environments and production processes
  • Exposure to CAD / technical drawings is beneficial
  • Knowledge of quality systems, audits, and health & safety
  • Strong leadership skills with a collaborative, low-ego mindset

Why This Role?

  • Opportunity to step into a broad, high-impact position within a growing business
  • Close working relationship with senior leadership and real influence on operations
  • Friendly, team-oriented culture with a hands-on, supportive environment
  • A role where you can genuinely shape processes, teams, and future growth
