Senior Engineering Technician – R&D Instrumentation (12-Month Contract)
Location: London
We are currently supporting a leading organisation developing next-generation DNA sequencing technology, who are looking to appoint a Senior Engineering Technician to support their R&D function on a 12-month contract.
This is a hands-on role focused on the build, deployment, and maintenance of complex instrumentation within a regulated (ISO 13485) environment.
The Role
As a Senior Engineering Technician, you will work closely with engineers and scientists to support the development and optimisation of advanced R&D systems.
You will be responsible for building, troubleshooting, and maintaining instrumentation incorporating fluidics, actuators, pumps, and sensors, ensuring high levels of performance and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Build, assemble, and deploy complex R&D instrumentation
- Troubleshoot faults and carry out corrective actions to improve system performance
- Perform preventive maintenance and fault tracking on devices, rigs, and fixtures
- Support prototype development, including mechanical builds and test setups
- Work collaboratively with engineers and scientists on R&D projects
- Interface with software-controlled systems during testing and operation
- Maintain accurate technical documentation, including SOPs, work instructions, and reports
- Manage parts and component stock to support engineering activities
- Carry out tasks with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
Requirements
- Experience as an Engineering Technician within medical devices, diagnostics, or a similar regulated industry
- Strong hands-on experience with electromechanical assembly, wiring, and soldering
- Proven ability in fault finding and troubleshooting complex systems
- Experience working with R&D devices, instrumentation, or test equipment
- Familiarity with prototyping techniques such as 3D printing, laser cutting, or CNC machining
- Basic CAD knowledge (e.g., SolidWorks)
- Experience working within a regulated/QMS environment (e.g., ISO 13485)
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
Desirable
- Experience with fluidics, pneumatics, or laboratory instrumentation
- Knowledge of electrical circuit design
