Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer with a strong background in high-voltage (HV) systems and proven experience working on projects associated with National Grid. The successful candidate will be responsible for the testing, commissioning, and handover of electrical infrastructure, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and execute commissioning activities on HV/LV electrical systems (up to 400kV)
- Perform testing on:
- Protection relays (e.g., distance, differential, overcurrent)
- Transformers, switchgear, and circuit breakers
- SCADA and control systems
- Interpret and work from engineering drawings, schematics, and protection settings
- Ensure compliance with National Grid standards, procedures, and safety rules
- Produce commissioning documentation, test records, and reports
- Interface with project managers, clients, and site teams
- Support fault finding and troubleshooting during energisation
- Participate in site acceptance tests (SAT) and factory acceptance tests (FAT)
- Ensure all work complies with CDM regulations and HSE requirements
Essential Requirements
- Proven commissioning experience on transmission or distribution projects linked to National Grid
- Strong knowledge of HV electrical systems (132kV, 275kV, 400kV)
- Experience with protection relays (e.g., Siemens, ABB, GE/Alstom)
- Familiarity with National Grid policies, standards, and procedures
- Ability to read and interpret:
- Single line diagrams (SLDs)
- Wiring diagrams
- Protection schematics
- Relevant electrical qualifications (HNC/HND, Degree, or equivalent)
- Valid authorisations (e.g., SAP, Person, or equivalent)
- Strong understanding of safety rules and permit systems
Desirable Skills
- Experience working on substations, grid connections, or renewable energy projects
- Knowledge of IEC standards and grid compliance requirements
- SCADA/RTU configuration and testing experience
- Experience with commissioning tools (OMICRON, Megger, etc.)
- Previous contractor or EPC project experience
