Job description

Eames are currently partnered with a leading Lloyd's Syndicate who are looking for an experienced Underwriter to join a Specialty Risks team, focusing on US General Liability across mid-market, large commercial risks, and Program Business. This role will see you underwriting a profitable US Small Business portfolio, while providing technical expertise, strategic insight, and strengthening market presence.


Key Responsibilities


Underwriting

  • Build, manage and grow a profitable US Small Business portfolio within Specialty Risks
  • Underwrite new and renewal business in line with underwriting strategy and appetite
  • Structure bespoke solutions using underwriting expertise to win and retain business
  • Monitor premiums, claims, and expense ratios taking action to maintain profitability
  • Assess risk pricing, factoring in reinsurance, capital exposure, and cost structures
  • Support innovation, including development of non-insurance service offerings
  • Oversee and guide junior team members to ensure consistency and compliance
  • Maintain strong collaboration with Claims on portfolio performance
  • Ensure adherence to underwriting controls across relevant platforms and entities


Client & Broker Engagement

  • Deliver high-quality advice and service to clients on risk and insurance matters
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients
  • Identify opportunities to cross-sell across the wider product suite
  • Ensure a strong understanding of client needs to drive long-term partnerships


Collaboration & Strategy

  • Contribute to underwriting best practice and policy development
  • Share market insights, trends, and opportunities across the team
  • Collaborate across the wider business to maximise growth
  • Support the development of business plans, research, and marketing materials
  • Represent the team through presentations and external engagement where required


About You


Essential Experience

  • Background in the insurance industry
  • Experience in US Small Business underwriting or broking
  • Strong technical underwriting capability


Skills & Capabilities

  • Strong analytical and numerical skills with high attention to detail
  • Clear and confident communication (written and verbal)
  • Effective time management and ability to prioritise workloads
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach


Knowledge

  • Solid commercial and financial awareness
  • In-depth understanding of underwriting principles and processes
