Design Team – Hybrid (Sussex / East Midlands / Hertfordshire)

Job Purpose

A leading design and engineering team is seeking a skilled Civil Design Engineer to support the development of water and wastewater treatment projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering, coordinating, and reviewing civil and structural engineering elements, while ensuring compliance with project, regulatory, and buildability requirements.

This role involves managing external design consultants, working closely with clients to define scope, and integrating civil engineering outputs with multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the civil design scope for water and wastewater treatment projects.
• Review, coordinate, and challenge designs produced by external civil and structural consultants.
• Liaise directly with clients to define requirements, clarify scope, and ensure satisfaction across the full design lifecycle.
• Produce and review technical documentation including drawings, calculations, specifications, and reports.
• Ensure compliance with relevant engineering standards, codes of practice, and environmental regulations.
• Work collaboratively with mechanical, electrical, and process engineering teams to deliver integrated design solutions.
• Undertake site assessments, surveys, and feasibility studies to inform design decisions.
• Participate in design risk assessments and contribute to the development of mitigation strategies.
• Provide technical support throughout procurement, construction, and commissioning stages.
• Promote sustainable, low-carbon design principles and ensure safety, access, lifting, and maintenance considerations are embedded in all designs.
• Monitor design progress and ensure timely delivery in line with programme requirements.

Additional Information

• Occasional travel may be required for external meetings and site visits.

Experience

• 5+ years’ experience in civil design engineering, ideally within the water or wastewater sector.
• Proven experience managing and reviewing external design consultants.
• Demonstrable experience delivering civil works packages, including earthworks, foundations, structures, and drainage.
• Strong understanding of construction methods and buildability principles.
• Knowledge of relevant civil engineering standards and regulations.

Essential Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
• Proficiency in civil design software (e.g., AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, or similar).
• Understanding of BIM processes and collaborative design environments.

Desirable Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Working towards or holding Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
• Experience in sustainable or low-carbon design solutions.
