Job description
We are seeking a Mechanical Team Lead to join a high-performing engineering team developing cutting-edge, complex technology products. This role is centred on technical leadership, guiding, mentoring, and enabling a team of engineers while remaining closely involved in hands-on design and engineering delivery.
You will act as the technical cornerstone of the team, driving engineering best practice, setting direction, and ensuring high-quality execution across multi-disciplinary development programmes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of mechanical engineers, fostering a strong technical culture and high-performance mindset
- Act as the primary technical authority within the mechanical function, guiding design decisions and problem-solving approaches
- Drive engineering excellence by establishing and improving design processes, standards, and ways of working
- Identify skills gaps within the team and actively support both technical growth and career development
- Oversee and coordinate complex project work packages, ensuring successful delivery across multiple concurrent programmes
- Collaborate closely with other engineering disciplines to ensure cohesive, system-level integration
- Balance hands-on design involvement with leadership responsibilities, leading by example in technical delivery
- Support resource planning and team structure decisions, ensuring the team is set up for success.
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience leading and developing engineering teams within a mechanical design environment
- Strong track record of delivering complex product development projects, ideally within high-tech industries
- Deep expertise in mechanical design across the full product lifecycle
- Experience working with precision engineering and complex assemblies, including optical systems integration
- Strong knowledge of design for manufacture, including precision machined and sheet metal components
- Proficiency in SolidWorks; experience with FEA or flow simulation is advantageous
- Highly capable hands-on engineer with the ability to guide others through complex technical challenges
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills, with experience managing multiple priorities and stakeholders
