Job description
We are seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer to join a high-performing engineering team working on cutting-edge, complex technology products. This role combines technical leadership with hands-on mechanical design and project ownership across multi-disciplinary development programmes.
You will lead by example, driving engineering excellence while remaining actively involved in design, analysis, and problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities
- Translate department objectives into clear team goals, KPIs, and delivery initiatives
- Lead and develop a mechanical engineering team, shaping working practices, design processes, and project execution standards
- Identify capability gaps within the team and support technical and professional development
- Take ownership of key project work packages and continuous improvement initiatives
- Coordinate delivery across internal engineering teams and external partners
- Act as a technical authority and hands-on contributor within mechanical design activities
- Collaborate closely with other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated system development
- Support management of workforce priorities, including advising on team structure, policies, and performance matters
- Ensure team alignment with organisational processes, standards, and expectations
Skills & Experience
- Proven track record of leading product development within mechanical engineering environments
- Experience in mechanical design of high-tech equipment across full product lifecycle
- Strong background in precision engineering, including optical systems integration
- Expert knowledge of mechanical design standards for precision machined and sheet metal components
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, with experience in FEA or flow simulation considered advantageous
- Strong hands-on engineering capability with understanding of modern manufacturing methods
- Excellent organisational and coordination skills, with experience managing multiple concurrent technical activities
