Year 5 Teaching Assistant

To support the class teacher in delivering high-quality education to pupils in Year 2 (Key Stage 1), assisting with learning activities, classroom management, and the personal development of children to help them reach their full potential as they make the transition into Key Stage 2.

Key Responsibilities for Year 5 Teaching Assistant

Classroom Support

  • Assist the class teacher in planning and delivering engaging lessons in line with the Key Stage 2 curriculum.
  • Support pupils during lessons, ensuring they understand instructions and stay on task.
  • Work with individuals or small groups to reinforce learning concepts, particularly in reading, writing, and maths.
  • Help prepare teaching materials and classroom resources.

Pupil Support

  • Provide additional support to pupils with varying abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
  • Encourage positive behaviour and support the school’s behaviour policy.
  • Assist pupils with personal, social, and emotional development.

Assessment and Monitoring

  • Observe and record pupil progress, providing feedback to the class teacher.
  • Support the assessment process by helping track learning and development.
  • Contribute to pupil reports and reviews where appropriate.

Classroom Environment

  • Help maintain a safe, clean, and stimulating learning environment.
  • Assist with classroom displays to support learning themes.
  • Ensure resources are organised and accessible.

Behaviour and Safeguarding

  • Promote a safe and inclusive environment for all pupils.
  • Follow safeguarding policies and report any concerns appropriately.
  • Encourage respectful behaviour and positive relationships among pupils.

Additional Duties

  • Support during school trips, events, and extracurricular activities.
  • Assist with playground or lunchtime supervision if required.
  • Attend staff meetings and relevant training sessions.

Person Specification for Year 2 Teaching Assistant

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Experience working with primary school children, ideally within Key Stage 2
  • Basic understanding of the Year 5 curriculum (including phonics and Year 6 SATS preparation).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Patient, caring, and enthusiastic approach to working with children.

Desirable

  • Relevant qualification (e.g., Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant).
  • Experience supporting children with SEN.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures.
