About the roleThe Lower Thames Crossing (LTC) is one of the UK's most significant infrastructure projects. LTC is a new road that will connect Kent and Essex through a tunnel beneath the River Thames and will be the greenest road ever built in the UK - creating six times more green space than road.

The reliable new route will almost double road capacity over the river east of London to reduce congestion and give millions of people more choice on where they live, work and spend their valuable time.

We are seeking a dedicated Senior Temporary Works Designer to be responsible for the delivery of complex and high‐risk Temporary Works designs and the coordination of design outputs to support construction activities on the Lower Thames Crossing project.

What you'll be doing

Delivering Temporary Works designs from concept through to detailed design, including complex and high‐risk schemes;

Producing coordinated and integrated Temporary Works designs that are ready for construction;

Designing a wide range of Temporary Works including both above and below ground systems;

Leading the development of design solutions, including selecting appropriate engineering approaches and temporary works schemes;

Acting as a Design Checker (Category 2/3 as appropriate), reviewing and verifying the work of others;

Providing technical guidance and mentorship to Temporary Works Designers and junior engineers;

Identifying Temporary Works load cases, construction stages and critical design conditions;

Ensuring all designs comply with BS5975, Eurocodes, and project‐specific standards;

Supporting and leading design risk assessments, ensuring risks are eliminated or reduced where reasonably practicable;

Identifying and resolving buildability and constructability issues in collaboration with construction teams;

Taking a proactive role in Temporary Works coordination with site teams, including direct engagement with Temporary Works Coordinators (TWCs);

Preparing and responding to Technical Queries in a timely manner;

Participating in and leading technical meetings where required;

Working collaboratively with CAD technicians and other designers to produce high‐quality design outputs;

Ensuring all comments are resolved prior to Issue for Construction;

Working in accordance with the project Design Management Plan and BIM Execution Plan;

Who we're looking forRequired Qualifications

Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent);

Significant experience in Temporary Works design (typically 5+ years);

Working knowledge of BS5975:2019, Eurocodes, and CDM Regulations;

Strong understanding of construction methods and Temporary Works applications;

Proven ability to undertake independent design of complex Temporary Works;

Experience in design checking and/or approval of engineering designs;

Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality;

Proficient in Microsoft Office and relevant engineering software;

Actively working towards or nearing professional membership (e.g. ICE or similar).

Desirable Qualifications

Chartered Engineer status (or close to achieving);

Experience on major infrastructure projects (e.g. Highways, tunnels, large civil engineering schemes such as Lower Thames Crossing);

Familiarity with design software (e.g. Tekla Tedds, CADS, Geo5, structural analysis tools);

Experience in areas such as:o Excavation support and retaining systemso Foundations and ground engineeringo Falsework and formworko Working platforms and haul roads

CAD/BIM experience (Bentley, Autodesk or similar);

Ability to challenge designs constructively to improve safety, efficiency and cost.
