A Band 6 opportunity has arisen on Ward 3 BRI. An exciting opportunity has arisen for an aspiring Senior Staff Nurse looking to develop their management skills and undertake a Band 6 role within a busy Elderly care admissions unit. The post is to support the Ward Manager and existing Sisters in the development of the ward and the delivery of excellent care to our patients.
The successful candidate will have line management responsibility and would be expected to effectively manage people alongside training and clinical supervisory responsibilities.
The Sister/Charge Nurse role will contribute to the operational management of a safe and quality service delivery on Ward 3, management of the workforce, budgetary oversight, patient experience, recruitment and retention of staff and effective patient management and flow.
An important aspect of the role will be promoting a positive, supportive working environment which values and supports staff. Excellent leadership and communication skills are essential and this will need to be demonstrated at interview. Individuals should be flexible and be able to demonstrate they are an excellent role model with the ability to develop positive and professional interpersonal relationships.
Main duties of the job
Follows the NMC code of conduct/practice
Effective management of health and safety issues
Assists the Ward Matron/Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in the organisation/delivery and monitoring of all aspects of service users requirements
Assist in assessing the requirements of the unit and assist in accurate control of the unit's budget
Assist in monitoring sickness and absence and accurate sickness management
Assist in implementing and compliance of all trust policies and guidelines
Initiate and develop improvements of services delivered to service users after discussion with senior sister and the ward team
Assist occasionally in production of the ward staff rotas to meet the care needs of the service users
Assist in fostering an environment that is conducive to positive change and empowerment
Investigates and reports untoward occurrences and maintains a safe environment at all times
Ensures safe custody and storage of medication and hazardous materials
Assists in recruitment, selection and retention of staff
Assist in maintaining staff records
Attend all the necessary mandatory training sessions and ensure full compliance with trust policies

Job responsibilities
Assist with the management of a team of staff ranging from Health care assistants to Band 5 staff nurses
To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care required for a range of elderly service users
To establish good lines of communication with members of the multi-disciplinary team, we work very closely with Physiotherapy /Occupational therapy/medical social workers and social services and the MAIDT team
The post holder must be able to communicate clearly and accurately to other team members on a daily basis
To attend and contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings/ward meetings/clinical governance meetings
To assist in achieving the necessary goals and targets set by the Trust and to ensure quality of care is maintained at all times
To liaise with service users family members/carers, and to offer help and support when required
To assist in ensuring all team members carry out their role in a professional effective manner
To complete audits and give feedback to the team
Person SpecificationExperience
Acute medical nursing experience preferably in care of older people
Regularly in charge of a ward
Delivered improvement in patient care
Worked within a multidisciplinary team
Excellent leadership and communication skills
Skills
Ability to prioritise and problem solve
Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
Additional clinical skills e.g. Cannulation, phlebotomy, intravenous drugs
Ability to make decisions and escape appropriately
Ability to challenge practice and support staff
ILS/ALS trained
Knowledge
Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
Understands how acute medicine patient flow works
Qualifications
Teaching and Assessing in practice qualification (SLIP)
Diploma/Degree in Nursing or equivalent experience/working towards
