Trainee Data Scientist

Job description

Stoke‐on‐Trent City Council – Public Health, Protection and Wellbeing – Department: Insights, Knowledge, Performance and Research – Location: Civic Centre – Grade: Level 6 – Salary: £28,598‐£31,022 per annum – Hours: 37 per week – Contract: 36‐month fixed term – Open to internal and external applicants.

The team works across a broad range of statutory and non‐statutory duties to protect and improve the health, wellbeing and safety of residents. You will support data analytics and develop a Level 6 Data Scientist Apprenticeship.

Key Responsibilities

Lead or support data analysis, surveys and reports presenting complex findings to diverse audiences

Support further development of statistical methods within the team and with wider stakeholders, maintaining links to external partners to stay abreast of best practice

Manage data pipelines from across the local authority and partners

Conduct deep‐dive analysis on priority areas such as child development and domestic abuse

Develop reporting dashboards to support service monitoring such as Environmental Health and Trading Standards, delivery of NHS Health Checks

About You

Demonstrate the ability to understand and interpret statistics and work with data, and an understanding of areas you are keen to develop through the apprenticeship

Be self‐motivated, able to operate well within a team and balance organisational workload while studying and completing assignments for your apprenticeship

Demonstrate experience at a proficient level with data management or presentation software such as Excel, Access or PowerBI

Understand and communicate principles of data science to others and support the development of knowledge across the organisation
