Job OverviewUniversity Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a Healthcare Support Worker to work in our Theatre departments.

LocationsSouthampton General Hospital – Centre block theatres and Princess Anne Hospital – Obstetric & Gynaecology theatre units.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Assist surgical and obstetric teams during procedures across a range of specialities including Orthopaedics, Neuro, Paediatrics, ENT, Cardiac, and mixed general surgery.

Support in circulating roles, patient positioning, hand‐over of equipment, and management of theatre workflow.

Participate in training and mentorship programmes to achieve skill levels 2 and 3 health care, with progression to Nursing or Operating Department Practitioner apprenticeship.

Work fully flexible shifts, including early, late, night, and long day slots, to cover 24/7 theatre services.

Provide high‐quality patient care, maintain hygiene and infection control standards, and contribute to a team‐based environment.

Eligibility & Requirements

Completed care certificate or ability to complete within 6 months of appointment.

Completed secondary education.

Ability to move and handle patients and equipment.

Evidence of empathy, patience and dependability.

Ability to deal with a range of difficult situations and follow instructions.

Ready to cope with fluctuating demands and pressures of the role.

Capable of completing core HCSW competencies and additional specific competencies related to area of work within 12 months of appointment.

Desirable Criteria

Experience in an Acute Hospital Setting.

Experience as a Nursing Home Carer.

Experience as a Teaching Assistant.

Prior HCA Experience.

Volunteer Sector experience.

Experience in a caring role.
