About the RoleAs a Musician Tutor for ArtForms, you will play a vital role in supporting the musical progress and aspirations of children and young people across Leeds. You will work predominantly during the school week in primary and secondary schools and also contribute to our Saturday morning Music Centre provision in one of our music centres, supporting ensemble work and progression pathways beyond the school day during term time.
For the Strings posts applicants should be able to teach all orchestral stringed instruments – Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass.
Job PurposeDelivery of effective instrumental or vocal learning for small groups, whole classes, and individuals in a variety of contexts in and beyond the school day (primary and secondary schools, SILCS, other learning environments) throughout the city, in line with ArtForms' shared and agreed practices.
Responsibilities
Using tuition and learning methods that keep pupils engaged
Supporting schools in their delivery of the National Curriculum in Music, including preparation of pupils for performances for GCSE, "A" level and other external examinations
Delivering the agreed number of hours of musical instructing in each scheduled learning context, either during the school day or after school hours
Taking part in and (where appropriate) leading curriculum enrichment and performances in schools as required
Assisting with a reasonable number of concerts or performances involving learners outside normal school hours
Maintaining contact with the management of schools in which they instruct and working in close consultation with school staff on matters concerning the selection of pupils, pupil numbers and grouping, progress and attendance
Assessing the needs of pupils and using detailed knowledge and specialist skills to support pupils' learning
Establishing productive working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations
Keeping records of pupils' attendance and progression, and providing written reports
Providing feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement
Organising and managing appropriate learning environments and resources
Keeping schools, pupils and parents informed of other opportunities provided by ArtForms and its partners
Helping schools with the day‐to‐day small‐scale maintenance of instruments
Ensuring that all equipment used and all premises in which activities take place receive due care and respect
Playing in ArtForms' staff ensembles as required
Being involved in coaching ensembles organised centrally, residential courses and other one‐off events in order to assist the progress and development of pupils (such involvement would be negotiated individually)
Actively promoting inclusion and equality for all
Participating in staff and departmental meetings, proportionate to contracted hours
Maintaining personal and professional development through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and other appropriate training activities to meet the developing demands of the post
Undertaking any other activities, training and/or hours of work that may be reasonably required and are consistent with the general level of responsibility of this post
Participating in and providing training and development activities as necessary to ensure up‐to‐date knowledge and skills
Complying with the requirements of all Leeds City Council policies, procedures and staff instructions, including responsibilities under the Health and Safety Policy and Procedures
Actively promoting and supporting Leeds City Council's Policies on Equal Opportunities and working in an anti‐oppressive manner
QualificationsIt is essential that the postholder has the following – Qualification to Grade 8 on at least one instrument (voice), or equivalent standard. A Graduate, professional qualification or equivalent or Qualified teacher status would also be welcome.
Essential Requirements
A high level of ability in the instrument being taught and a knowledge of teaching that instrument family
Ability to teach all levels from beginners upwards
Ability to motivate learners of all abilities
Ability and experience of teaching groups and individuals
Ability to adapt easily to a variety of working practices and teaching environments
Knowledge of a wide range of musical styles and appropriate repertoire for the specific instrument family
Broader knowledge of the teaching and learning of music and current instrumental teaching trends
Desirable Requirements
Ability to promote music education and to advocate for quality music teaching in music centres
Understanding and knowledge of different pedagogical approaches to music teaching (e.g. Kodaly, Orff, Musical Futures, Voices Foundation)
Experience of teaching a wide age range of learners
Experience of creating and arranging learning materials appropriate for use in lessons
Experience of promoting and delivering music in educational settings
Some experience of teaching in schools
