Location: London (hybrid/office-based as required)
Working hours: 40 hours per week (07:00–15:00, 08:00–16:00 or 09:00–17:00 shift)

Role OverviewThe UK Reporter is responsible for delivering fast-paced, accurate, and insightful coverage of the UK energy markets for Montel News. The role focuses on UK power and gas markets, including price movements, supply and demand fundamentals, regulatory and policy developments, and broader market drivers affecting the UK energy system.
The reporter will produce daily news stories, market commentary, and analytical pieces, while also contributing to breaking news coverage and longer-form features. A key part of the role involves building strong industry contacts and identifying early signals of market-moving developments.
The role requires a strong understanding of energy market dynamics and the ability to quickly translate complex information into clear, accessible journalism.
Key ResponsibilitiesUK Energy Market Coverage
Cover UK wholesale power and gas markets with daily news and analysis
Track and report key price movements and underlying market drivers
Write fast, accurate breaking news stories affecting UK energy markets
Produce daily market commentary with clear explanation of trends and context
Monitor and interpret UK energy policy, regulation, and government interventions
Analyse supply-demand fundamentals, including generation, LNG flows, storage, and interconnection impacts
News Gathering & Reporting
Develop and maintain a strong network of industry contacts including utilities, traders, regulators, and analysts
Identify and break news relevant to UK energy markets
Produce features and in-depth analysis on key market themes and structural trends
Attend industry events, briefings, and conferences where relevant
Market Analysis & Insight
Translate complex market and policy developments into clear, data-driven journalism
Identify emerging trends in UK energy pricing and system dynamics
Support newsroom understanding of UK market developments through analysis and commentary
Collaboration & Newsroom Support
Work closely with editors and reporters across European coverage areas
Contribute to integrated coverage linking UK markets with wider European energy developments including through our planning function
File stories promptly in line with newsroom deadlines
Participate in editorial discussions and contribute story ideas for wider newsroom output
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Economics, Energy, Political Science, or related field
Experience in journalism, financial reporting, or energy/commodity markets reporting
Strong writing skills with the ability to produce clear, accurate news under tight deadlines
Good understanding of UK energy markets or demonstrable ability to learn quickly
Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret data and market movements
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for stakeholder engagement
Preferred
Knowledge of UK power and gas markets, including pricing mechanisms and key drivers
Familiarity with UK energy policy and regulatory framework (e.g. Ofgem, DESNZ)
Experience reporting on commodities or financial markets
Existing contacts within the UK energy sector
Ability to identify and develop original news stories in a competitive environment
Experience working in a real-time news or wire-style newsroom
