Civils & Groundworks Operative – Water Utilities

The Role

As a Civils & Groundworks Operative, you will support utility infrastructure works, including excavation, trenching, reinstatement and associated groundworks for water meter installation and maintenance projects.

You will work as part of a field team, ensuring all works are completed safely, professionally, on time and to the required specification.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out excavation, trenching and groundworks activities

Support smart water meter installation and external meter works

Assist with locating, exposing and accessing underground water assets

Carry out reinstatement works following excavation

Use hand tools, breakers, compactors and other equipment safely

Support pipework, chamber, boundary box and service-related works where required

Follow RAMS, site instructions, permit conditions and safety procedures

Set up and maintain safe working areas, including barriers, cones and signage where required

Maintain a clean, safe and professional working environment

Report site issues, delays, defects, service strikes, near misses or safety concerns immediately

Work effectively with supervisors, project coordinators, water meter technicians and reinstatement teams

Complete job records, photos and daily reporting where required

Essential Requirements

Previous experience in civils, groundworks, utilities, drainage, reinstatement or construction

Good understanding of safe excavation and site working practices

Strong work ethic and reliability

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Good timekeeping and willingness to travel for site work

Ability to follow instructions, RAMS and safety procedures

Right to work in the UK

Preferred Requirements

Valid CSCS card

NRSWA Operative qualification

Full UK driving licence

CAT & Genny training

Manual handling training

First Aid training

CPCS / NPORS plant tickets

Experience in water utilities, meter installation, boundary boxes or reinstatement works
