Role Overview
University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust is looking for a Clinical Specialist Sonographer to provide Head and Neck (ENT) and Maxillofacial Ultrasound within a consultant‐led imaging service.

Role responsibilities include independent ultrasound scanning, reporting, and ultrasound‐guided interventional procedures such as fine needle aspiration (FNA). The post holder will support cancer pathways, including Two Week Wait (TWW) and the 28‐day Faster Diagnosis Standard, and contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver high‐quality Head and Neck ultrasound service, including independent scanning, reporting, and FNA procedures.

Provide service coverage for a 7‐day ultrasound schedule, including weekends and bank/public holidays.

Collaborate with Radiologists, ENT clinicians, Cytology and oncology teams to support one‐stop pathways and MDT decision‐making.

Provide clinical leadership within the sonography workforce, supporting training, supervision and development of junior staff.

Contribute to education for Radiology Registrars and other learners.

Engage in service development, quality improvement and clinical audit activities.

Qualifications & Experience

Qualified sonographer with experience in Head and Neck or Maxillofacial ultrasound.

Evidence of independent ultrasound practice and reporting.

Experience with ultrasound‐guided interventional procedures such as FNA.

Strong understanding of cancer diagnostic pathways, including TWW and the 28‐day Faster Diagnosis Standard.

Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.

Demonstrated leadership and teaching skills within a clinical setting.

Trainee Option
Where a fully trained candidate is not identified, applications are welcomed from qualified sonographers who wish to develop into this role through a structured training pathway with progression on completion. The trainee will be appointed at Band 7 and undertake a structured training programme, progressing to independent practice and full competency in Head and Neck ultrasound and FNA procedures.
