Junior Game Designer - RuneScape

Job description

Location: Cambridge, UK – This position can accommodate flexible working options. However, candidates must be based (or be willing to relocate) within a comfortable commuting distance of our Cambridge office to be able to attend onsite as required.

Are you a creative, systems-minded designer with a passion for RuneScape and a drive to build content that millions of players will experience?

As a Junior Game Designer on the RuneScape Design team, you'll design and implement engaging content across a variety of areas of the game from initial concept through to scripting and release. You'll get hands-on with RuneScript, our in-house scripting language (full training provided), and quickly build the skills to bring your ideas to life in one of the longest-running MMORPGs in history.

Working within multi-disciplinary teams, you'll contribute to weekly updates for a passionate, dedicated player community and grow your craft with the support of experienced designers around you.

What you'll be doing

Design varied and engaging content across multiple areas of RuneScape, taking creative ownership of smaller tasks while contributing to larger projects alongside your team.

Script your designs using RuneScript, our in-house language, developing the technical skills needed to bring your content to life directly in the game.

Build and maintain clear design documentation to support collaboration and keep development on track.

Continuously deepen your knowledge of RuneScape's existing systems, content, and community so your work integrates seamlessly into the broader game.

Collaborate closely with designers, engineers, artists, and community teams to contribute to high-quality weekly updates.

Engage with the RuneScape community – supported by our embedded Community Management team – to develop an understanding of player needs and desires.

What we're looking for

A strong working knowledge of RuneScape, including its skills, quests, progression systems, and player behaviours – this is essential.

Understanding of MMORPG content loops, progression design, and systemic game design principles.

Some experience with scripting or programming, demonstrating the technical aptitude to learn RuneScript.

Proven ability to manage your own time, communicate progress clearly, and know when to ask for support.

Experience working collaboratively within a team environment, whether in game development, modding, or a related creative field.
