Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced General Manager to lead a new Inspection Qualification Services business unit at TWI Middlesbrough, UK. The role involves managing a small, specialist team that delivers independent and impartial qualification of non‑destructive testing (NDT) procedures, personnel and equipment in critical safety sectors, including nuclear and defence.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
- Lead and manage the inspection qualification services business unit, ensuring delivery of safe, high‑quality and compliant services.
- Ensure all activities comply with ISO17020 requirements, maintaining independence, impartiality and technical integrity.
- Develop and grow the business by engaging with industry, identifying new opportunities and building a pipeline of work.
- Manage and develop technical staff in line with TWI values and organisational requirements.
- Work with QHSE to establish, implement and maintain the management system and support accreditation activities.
- Maintain ISO17020 accreditation, engage with auditors and resolve non‑conformances promptly.
- Review incoming work to ensure capability and capacity to meet customer requirements and monitor delivery to maintain safety and quality standards.
- Ensure facilities, equipment and working environments are suitable for qualification activities.
- Support the team in times of high demand and remain flexible to the needs of the business.
Requirements & Competencies
- Proven leadership experience managing a technical team.
- Strong knowledge of NDT procedures, personnel and equipment qualification, particularly in highly regulated sectors such as nuclear and defence.
- Experience operating within ISO17020 or similar quality management frameworks and maintaining accreditation.
- Excellent communication skills – able to liaise with customers, regulators and internal stakeholders.
- Business acumen – balancing technical understanding with effective business and operational management.
- Strong organisational and problem‑solving skills, able to operate in a fast‑paced environment with competing priorities.
- UK Security Clearance (or ability to obtain one) – required for the role.
Travel & Working Arrangements
Short‑term travel within the UK and overseas as required. The role can be operated on a hybrid basis: three days working in the office or customer sites, the remainder working remotely.
Salary and Contract
Permanent, full‑time position. Salary range: £60,500–£96,600 per annum. Base salary subject to experience.
