Acute Oncology Clinical Sister

We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated and experienced Registered Nurse to join our Acute Oncology Team as a Band 6 Acute Oncology Sister. This is an exciting opportunity to provide specialist care for patients experiencing complications related to cancer and systemic anti‑cancer treatment, ensuring timely assessment with telephone triage, clinical assessment and intervention. As an autonomous practitioner working as part of a multi‑disciplinary team you will support the patient pathway working in partnership with other disciplines to deliver safe and supported patient outcomes.
Job responsibilities
- Assist the Unit Manager in leading a team of nurses to deliver a high standard of care.
- Manage specialist care for both inpatient and outpatient and day‑case patients, including those receiving chemotherapy and presenting with complications such as neutropenic sepsis.
- Participate in the acute oncology nurse rota.
- Perform clinical duties including venesection, management of central venous access devices, peripheral cannulation, and systemic anticancer drug (including chemotherapy) administration.
- Participate in patient chemotherapy clinics, including nurse‑led telephone assessment, holistic assessment and end‑of‑chemotherapy reviews.
- Audit care against agreed standards, identify any weaknesses and develop action plans to address them.
- Implement information strategies ensuring patients and carers receive all required information about their investigations and disease.
- Communicate complex and sensitive information to patients/carers and support other staff in undertaking this role.
- Base practice on current best evidence.
- Lead on an agreed area of day unit/chemotherapy practice.
- Lead in the evaluation of current research findings and, if appropriate, implement them into practice on the unit.
- Lead on identified clinical audit projects.
- Maintain services to meet contract and quality standards; take corrective action and inform the Unit Manager of unresolved problems.
- Review the standard of care and documentation at regular intervals, benchmarking performance against NMC guidelines and local targets.
- Promote patient involvement in care, implement a communication system to keep patients and families informed of treatment and progress, and undertake audits at required intervals to maintain record‑keeping standards.
- Investigate complaints and untoward incidents in accordance with Trust policies and procedures, provide statements accurately, and support the Unit Manager in improving systems to prevent recurrence.
- Contribute to the planning, monitoring and control of unit resources, assisting the Unit Manager to keep expenditures within budgets.
- Assist the Unit Manager in optimising nursing resources through even distribution of staff leave and matching skill mix to workload.
- Recruit and select quality staff for the unit, identifying future job requirements for profiling to complement the team.
- Develop teams, individuals and staff performance through facilitation of staff development using IPR and PDP.
- Monitor staff performance and report progress to the Unit Manager at regular intervals.
- Plan, organise and evaluate work, ensuring adequate induction of new staff including effective preceptorship for newly qualified nurses and student nurses on ward/department placements.
- Ensure the ward is staffed appropriately and within budget at all times.
- Create and maintain productive working relationships within and outside the ward/department by minimising unproductive conflicts and promoting positive teamwork.
- Promote compliance with Trust policies and procedures; undertake counselling as appropriate and report difficult cases to the Unit Manager.
- Provide information and advice for organisational objectives, attend divisional and other meetings on behalf of the Unit Manager as necessary, and disseminate information up and down the management structure.
- Assist in collecting and organising information for incorporation into divisional service plans.
- Keep abreast of new health‑care developments, ensuring nursing practice is evidence‑based and cost‑effective.
- Be responsible for own personal and professional development and assist the Unit Manager in the development of junior staff.
- Ensure all qualified nurses maintain valid NMC registration and practice in accordance with the NMC code of conduct.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Teaching and assessing qualification
- Recognised chemotherapy qualification
- Moving and handling, basic CPR, IT skills, intravenous drug administration
- Venepuncture and cannulation skills
Experience
- Minimum of 12 months experience at Band 5 in haematology/oncology with evidence of continued professional development in this area.
- Recent experience in chemotherapy administration.
Skills
- Able to initiate and deliver high‑quality nursing care.
- Can plan, delegate and supervise others.
- Able to manage clinical area effectively.
- Demonstrates ability to initiate the implementation of evidence‑based practice.
