Junior Clinical Fellow in Gastroenterology

This position is suitable for candidates who may wish to pursue a career in Gastroenterology, and who might wish to sample the specialty or to gain experience in order to strengthen their application to a Core Training rotation. Alternatively, they might suit candidates who wish to pursue a complementary specialty in which gastroenterology and general internal medicine experience is required. Previous experience in the speciality is not required. These positions will be treated in the same manner as our ST1 positions.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the delivery of high-quality gastroenterology and general internal medicine services at PAHT while developing the core clinical, procedural, and professional competencies expected of an ST1 trainee. The post provides broad exposure to acute and chronic gastrointestinal disease within a busy District General Hospital (DGH) environment. The post holder will work alongside and in conjunction with the other Residents in Gastroenterology to provide predominantly inpatient and outpatient care to gastroenterology, hepatology and general medical patients. Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients with gastroenterological and liver disease. The role will allow for exposure to the high‑quality endoscopy service.

Job responsibilities

  • Provide day‑to‑day care for gastroenterology inpatients
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage conditions including:
    • Gastrointestinal bleeding
    • Decompensated liver disease
    • Inflammatory bowel disease flares
    • Pancreatitis and biliary pathology
  • Participate in consultant‑led ward rounds (2–3 times per week)
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and management plans
  • Liaise with surgical, radiology, and specialist teams
  • Participate in the full General Internal Medicine rota
  • Clerk and manage acute admissions via Acute Medical Unit and Emergency Department
  • Recognise and escalte critically unwell patients: GI haemorrhage, Sepsis, Acute liver failure
  • Work under supervision of medical registrars and consultants
  • Attend and contribute to gastroenterology clinics: General GI, IBD, Hepatology
  • Initially observe, progressing to supervised patient review
  • Develop outpatient diagnostic and management skills
  • Practice practical procedures: Venepuncture & peripheral venous cannulation, Ascitic aspiration and drain insertion, Arterial blood gas sampling, Nasogastric tube insertion

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • A valid Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council
  • MBBS or equivalent training and experience
  • Completion of Foundation Training or equivalent
  • Experience in Medicine and Gastroenterology (More than 1 year)

Experience

  • Experience in managing acute gastroenterology patients
  • Evidence of audit or quality improvement
  • Experience managing acute medical patients
