Job DescriptionUK Networks Services(UKNS) is an engineering company at the forefront of the UK'stransition to a smarter, more flexible electricity system. Ourwork spans two core areas:
- Technical gridconsulting - advising on complex grid connections, regulatorystrategy, and power system planning for some of the UK's mostsignificant infrastructure projects.
- Smart grid controlsystems - designing and deploying advanced automation,monitoring, and control solutions that enable customers toconnect, manage and optimise energy assets across large,distributed networks.
Within the smart gridside of the business, we design and integrate systems that combinePLC-based control, SCADA, metering, protection, and real-time dataplatforms. These systems are deployed on projects such asgrid-scale load management, site-wide export limitation,substation automation and dynamic network control.
Position Overview:
As a Junior Systems Developer, you will build and enhance the software and data systems that underpin our smart grid solutions.
This role is based full time at our office in Little Hadham, Hertfordshire, a short drive from Bishops Stortford.
This role is aimed at a Graduate or Junior .NET developer with solid experience who wants to expand into cloud, IoT and systems engineering. You will work across edge devices, cloud platforms and real-world infrastructure, gaining exposure well beyond a typical software role.
You will work closelywith the CTO and engineering teams to deliver scalable, reliablesystems that connect devices, process data and provide meaningfulinsights to customers.
What you'll be doing:
• Develop software forIoT edge devices using .NET and Node-RED
• Design and developdatabase architectures and data models
• Build and enhance IoTcontrol systems using MQTT and Modbus
• Develop and improvecustomer-facing SCADA and data visualisation platforms
• Create automatedprovisioning, deployment and testing systems via APIs and device automation
• Build reportingsystems for customers, devices and internal operations
• Improve data export,processing and integration pipelines
• Contribute to ongoingimprovements in system performance and efficiency
• Support and maintainAzure-based environments
• Manage and optimiseSQL databases
• Maintain cloud andon-premise virtual machines
• Support mobilegateway infrastructure and VPN connectivity
• Manage SIM-basedconnectivity across deployed devices
• Maintain and monitorMQTT messaging infrastructure
• Support and enhanceGrafana dashboards and customer reporting tools
• Support FAT, SAT and commissioning activities alongside the wider engineering team
• Contribute to system architecture design and interface specifications for large, distributed control projects
Requirements
Essentialqualifications & experience :
• Degree in software development, or 3+ years'experience
• Experiencewith the Microsoft stack (.NET, C#, SQL Server)
• Experiencewith JSON
• Experience or understanding of workingwith APIs and system integration
• Experience or understanding of cloudplatforms (preferably Azure)
• Strongproblem-solving ability and practical mindset
Desirable :
• Experience with or understanding of IoTtechnologies (MQTT, Modbus)
• Familiarity withNode-RED or similar tools
• Experience with or understanding of Grafana or data visualisation platforms
• Understanding ofnetworking concepts (VPNs, routing, gateways)
