Main duties of the job

The Consultant will provide medical leadership to the Kingston Hospital Liaison Psychiatry Team and work closely with the Team Manager to ensure safe, efficient and effective services meeting the Trust’s Key Performance Indicators. The Consultant shares responsibility for the standard of care delivered by the team, participates in audit and governance, resolves issues independently where possible, and escalates unresolved concerns to the Team Manager.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Kingston Hospital Liaison Psychiatry service, established in 2015, provides 24/7 coverage. The team integrates Older Adult Psychiatry specialists with general adult psychiatrists, ensuring a single referral point for all age groups. The Consultant will:

• Lead section 12 cover for the acute hospital (9 am – 5 pm) alongside the Associate Specialist.
• Take clinical lead on S.12 cover for the ED and AAU working‑age presentations.
• Lead S.12 cover for older‑adult presentations where appropriate.
• Participate in joint teaching for medical students, junior doctors, and nurses.
• Contribute to and modify the timetable in consultation with the Clinical Director, following the Job Plan and Trust Clinical Governance Procedures.
• Refer to attached JDPS for further details.

Qualifications

• Primary medical degree.
• Full GMC registration.
• Included on, or eligible for inclusion on, the GMC Specialist Register within three months of completing CCT.
• Section 12(2) approval of the Mental Health Act.
• MRCPsych, or equivalent; inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry.
• CCT in General Adult Psychiatry.
• Qualification in a talking therapy such as CBT, DBT, or MBT.
• Qualifications in change management and service development.
• Other relevant higher degrees or further training.

Knowledge and Experience

• Minimum three years full‑time training in an approved Higher Psychiatric training scheme.
• Detailed knowledge of treatment approaches for severe mental illness, including pharmacological interventions.
• Experience of the CPA process, risk assessment, and risk management.
• Experience teaching medical and non‑medical staff, including those without formal qualifications.

Audit and Management

• Engage in continuing professional development and obtain CPD approval through a peer group.
• Commitment to clinical audit, quality improvement, and collaboration with the liaison psychiatry team, acute trust, and managers.
• Work with allied agencies including carer groups and local charities.
• Experience of service planning and development.
• Experience of working with third‑sector partners.

Research and Publications

• Evidence of participation in research and study outcomes.
• Higher degree in research, completion of a research project, and evidence of dissemination.
• Publication in a peer‑reviewed journal.

Teaching

• Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry.
• Teaching qualification; evidence of positive feedback from students.
