Overview

Consultant Psychiatrist required to work at Cygnet Hospital Beckton, providing senior medical cover on Upping Ward, a 15 bed Intensive Support Service for women with a diagnosis of personality disorder and complex mental health needs. The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician, oversee inpatient care, and audit medical services to ensure high quality care in line with GMC standards and relevant guidelines. The role offers a clear pathway for career progression and multidisciplinary collaboration within a supportive team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead on the provision of high quality care to service users admitted to Upping Ward.
  • Act as a positive role model and maintain constructive relationships with patients, families, visitors and staff.
  • Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Assess referrals and undertake mental state examinations of service users.
  • Undertake investigations, diagnose, and treat patients as appropriate.
  • Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews, and clinical audits.
  • Lead the implementation of risk assessment, risk management, and embed clinical governance within the service.
  • Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and managers’ hearings; attend hearings as required.
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Justice for transfer of patients and approval of leave as required.
  • Maintain good patient records and ensure regular communication with Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, staff, directors and other stakeholders; maintain appropriate reports.
  • Attend and contribute to academic meetings and adhere to GMC, Department of Health, and Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD standards.
  • Contribute to the second on-call rota in line with regional needs.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Fully GMC registered and MBBS (or equivalent) qualified.
  • Registered on the specialist register (CCT/CESR); Section 12 and AC status.
  • Experience and knowledge in learning disabilities and mental health diagnosis.
  • Knowledgeable of the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity.
  • Excellent communication skills to interview, assess, and treat patients and to write clear, comprehensive medical notes.
  • Committed to continuing professional development; able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent.
