Locum Consultant in General Internal Medicine (YC73)

Job overview

Full‑time Locum Consultant to provide consultant‑led care on a newly developed Medical Specialties ward at Wythenshawe site, comprising 22 beds and caring for patients with various presenting conditions.

Main duties

• Manage patient care alongside other consultant medical colleagues. Provide teaching and supervision to junior staff. Lead on service delivery, improvement and relevant QIP initiatives. Build strong relationships with ward manager, matron, and operational team to deliver high‑quality, safe care.

• Contribute to the general medical on‑call rota, including a 1:8 weekend and a 1:24 evening rota, with overnight availability from home. Weekend rota covers post‑take ward‑round reviews or management of the Acute Medical Unit. Four to five general medical consultants are rostered each weekend day for peer support, and the rota offers a 1 % supplement for overnight commitments.

Person specification

  • Basic Medical Qualification
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Evidence of interest in teaching
  • Higher Medical Degree
  • Research in areas of relevance and innovative practice
  • Recognised teaching qualification

Training

  • Completed or within 6 months of securing a CCT in General Internal Medicine, or its equivalent
  • Entry on Specialist Register of the GMC for General Internal Medicine

Experience

  • Broad experience in General Medicine
  • Supervision and training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff
  • Experience and enthusiasm to teach a wide spectrum of multidisciplinary staff
  • Special interests

Skills

  • Ability to undertake or supervise audit and quality improvement projects resulting in improved practice
  • Ability to work in the Medicine Directorate and liaise with professional colleagues
  • Evidence of awareness of and active participation in current management issues
  • Enthusiasm to build, lead and work in a team
  • Effective communication with patients and relatives
  • Effective communication with and motivation of staff
  • Ability to co‑ordinate multidisciplinary audit programme
