NATIONAL TREATMENT CENTRE – HIGHLAND, INVERNESS
CONSULTANT OPHTHALMOLOGIST
£111,430 to £148,064 (per annum pro rata)

We are looking for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with general ophthalmology skills and an optional special interest to complement the existing clinical team. You must be exceptional as both a clinician and a team player, able to evidence continuous service improvement and a commitment to developing a multi‑disciplinary team approach.
Based at the National Treatment Centre – Highland (NTC‑H), the role will provide comprehensive visiting Ophthalmic Service to Caithness, Fort William, Western Isles, Benbecula and Orkney via a Service Level Agreement. Regular visits to the Western Isles or Orkney will be required, with additional visits to Caithness and Fort William depending on service demand.
The post also involves participation in a 1:8, 8am‑8pm on‑call rota and offers the opportunity for both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Employment terms: ten programmed activity basis (8 DCC: 2 SPA). Part‑time and flexible working options are available.
Responsibilities
- Provide general ophthalmology services, including peripheral clinics and operating theatre sessions.
- Conduct elective hand and foot surgery sessions on one ophthalmology theatre two days per week.
- Deliver ophthalmology services to remote locations (Western Isles, Orkney, Caithness, Fort William) as required.
- Participate in on‑call rota and teaching activities.
- Contribute to continuous service improvement and multidisciplinary teamwork.
Qualifications & Requirements
- GMC Specialist Register.
- Hold or be within 6 months of obtaining a CCT or CESR (Article 14 – Certificate of Equivalency).
- Proven experience in general ophthalmology; optional special interest in areas such as Vitreoretina, Oculoplastics, Glaucoma, Uveitis, Paediatrics, Neuro‑ophthalmology, Strabismus, Cornea or Medical Retina.
- Strong clinical competence, team working, and commitment to improving patient care.
