Consultant Medical Oncologist - Lung & Acute Oncology

An exciting opportunity to join the Lung and Acute team at The Christie NHS foundation Trust.

The appointee will be based at The Christie and provide consultant level care for patients with lung cancer from both The Christie Withington site and the Wythenshawe Hospital site of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. This includes outpatient care through clinics and day case units where systemic anti‑cancer therapy is delivered, as well as inpatient care on the main adult oncology wards.

Main duties

The role also rotates into an acute oncology consultant post to provide an inpatient service for selected non‑elective admissions related to the patient’s underlying malignancy or its treatment. The consultant will provide senior support, leadership and coordination of junior doctors, liaise with the patient’s oncology team, ensure timely progress and appropriate discharge, conduct board rounds, and supervise and support junior doctors.

Job responsibilities

• Management of lung cancer patients receiving standard therapy and participating in phase II/III trials, including treatment decisions and ongoing care.
• Participate in clinical governance: maintain up‑to‑date protocols, guidelines and clinical audit.
• Contribute to research projects and create new opportunities to develop and expand research.
• Revise and develop evidence‑based protocols and perform administrative duties associated with patient care.
• Maintain continuous professional development in line with the Royal College of Physicians recommendations.
• Teach undergraduate medical students on oncology topics and present lectures for postgraduate teaching programmes.
• Actively contribute to training of junior doctors and multidisciplinary team members in both inpatient and outpatient settings, acting as clinical supervisor.
• Participate in clinical audit as a member of The Christie Medical Staff Committee.

Person Specification

• GMC registration with a licence to practice.
• Only substantive consultants: Entry on the GMC specialist register via Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).
• Extensive experience in medical oncology and clinical trials with a demonstrated interest in improving outcomes for patients with malignancies.
• Evidence of productive, ethical research relevant to oncology.
• Demonstrable publication potential (e.g., first‑author original article).

Salary: £113,565 to £150,569 per annum, pro rata.
