Deputy General Manager – Surgery

The Surgical Divisions are looking for a forward‑thinking and enthusiastic Business Manager to work closely with the General Manager for surgery to drive service improvement. The successful applicant will support the GM to ensure the provision of high quality, efficient and effective services, deliver and help execute service strategy, and ensure appropriate risk‑management processes are in place.
Main duties of the job
- Play a highly visible role in ensuring standards of care for all patients and the safe, effective and efficient utilisation of resources
- Build strong, cohesive working relationships with Clinical Leads and Matrons for the designated responsibilities
- Line‑manage administration staff
- Responsibility for the operational delivery aspects of delegated divisional areas
- Support the GM, Clinical Leads and Matron in formulating the strategic direction of services
- Accountable for service delivery and associated operational issues
- Deputise for the GM as required
Other key responsibilities include:
- Facilitate performance improvement policies and implement them effectively
- Manage resources to improve quality and productivity within the division
- Lead, manage and motivate staff, ensuring appropriate management structures, policies and practices are in place
- Ensure compliance with mandatory national targets, including Clinical Quality Indicators
- Develop a whole‑systems/partnership culture within the divisional areas
- Promote implementation of mandatory mandatory mandates such as Agenda for Change and compulsory mandatory mandatory mandates

Person Specification
Knowledge & Experience
- Experience of working at a senior/corporate level
- Demonstrable experience in leading, motivating and managing teams
- Experience of strategic thinking at a senior level
- Knowledge of key national NHS policy and strategies
- Experience of budget management and staff management
- Experience of working at a senior/corporate level within the NHS
Qualifications & Training
- Educated to Master level or equivalent experience in a health‑related or relevant field
Personal Attributes & Skills
- Proficient IT skills – MS Office including Excel and PowerPoint for professional development and delivery of presentations to small and large groups of staff
- Ability to lead a team, ensuring it is customer‑focused and delivers high‑quality service
- Ability to analyse statistical information and produce reports/documents for Trust Board consideration
- Strong interpersonal skills, displaying credibility, influence and political acumen with a customer‑focus approach to problem solving
