We are looking to recruit a full‑time consultant to work on Elm Ward – an acute admission ward in West Park Hospital, Darlington. The post is a 1.0 WTE position and will be based at Elm Ward (female acute) and Maple Ward (male acute). The consultant will provide clinical input to approximately 10–12 patients on both acute wards, depending on acuity.

The post will be based within the "Purposeful In‑Patient Admissions" model and the Productive Ward framework. The consultant will work closely with another Consultant Psychiatrist and a Consultant Nurse, providing leadership, clinical governance, and service development within the adult mental health community.

Job responsibilities

The principal duties of the role include:

• Support the inpatient team on Elm and Maple wards.
• Provide clinical leadership alongside the multidisciplinary team and team manager.
• Contribute to service development and clinical governance.
• Set and maintain standards and commit to quality improvement.

Clinical Knowledge & Skills

• Excellent knowledge in specialty
• Excellent clinical skills using a bio‑psycho‑social perspective and wide medical knowledge
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
• Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
• Makes decisions based on evidence and experience, including the contribution of others
• Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
• Wide range of specialist and sub‑specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service

Qualifications

• MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
• Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
• Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
• Eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within 6 months of gaining CCT
• Approved clinician status or able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
• Approved under S12 or able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
• In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
• Included on the GMC Specialist Register
