Trust Doctor (ST1-2 equivalent) in Palliative Medicine (0.2 WTE)

Fixed Term 6 months

This is a rare opportunity to join the Margaret Centre, our 11-bed Acute Specialist Palliative Care Unit at Whipps Cross University Hospital (part of Barts Health NHS Trust), as a Clinical Fellow in Palliative Medicine on a 0.2 WTE (1 day per week) basis.

Main duties of the job

This is a solely clinical post, ideal for a GPST1-2 level doctor looking to gain focused, supervised experience in specialist palliative care alongside their training programme. There is no dedicated research time built into the post, although the successful candidate may have the opportunity to contribute to project work with the Academic Centre for Healthy Aging, depending on interest and availability

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Full GMC Registration with license to practice
  • Completion of foundation training
  • Additional postgraduate qualification relevant to general or palliative medicine
  • Membership examination progress (e.g. MRCGP components) appropriate to stage of training
  • Evidence of participation in research (peer reviewed publications etc.)

Experience

  • Experience working within a hospital multidisciplinary team, appropriate to stage of training
  • Current ALS certificate
  • Subspecialty Experience in palliative medicine, acute medicine, oncology

Knowledge

  • Sound working knowledge of general medicine appropriate to stage of training, with an interest in developing specialist palliative care skills
  • Knowledge of multidisciplinary clinical audit and demonstrable commitment to improving quality of care to patients
  • Understanding of modern medical curricula and commitment to life-long learning

Skills

  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Willingness to support the supervision of more junior colleagues on the ward as required
  • Ability to teach medical students and junior medical and nursing staff.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own workload effectively
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs nurses and other agencies
  • Teaching Qualification
  • Advanced Communication Skills Training
