Due to continued growth and expansion, Q Crane & Plant Hire Limited is looking for a highly motivated and experienced Crane Engineer to join our team.

The role will be primarily workshop-based at our Oldham depot, carrying out inspections, servicing, fault diagnosis and repairs across our fleet of lattice boom and telescopic crawler cranes. The successful candidate will also be required to attend customer sites and project locations throughout the UK when necessary.

This is a varied, hands-on role within a forward-thinking, family-run business and will involve supporting the safe maintenance, mobilisation and operation of our crane fleet.


Key Responsibilities


  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic faults on crawler cranes and associated equipment.
  • Carry out effective repairs and component replacement in accordance with manufacturer guidance and company procedures.
  • Complete planned preventative maintenance, routine servicing and safety inspections.
  • Attend crane breakdowns at customer sites throughout the UK.
  • Assist with the rigging and de-rigging of lattice boom and telescopic crawler cranes.
  • Prepare cranes for mobilisation and inspect equipment following its return from hire.
  • Carry out pre-hire and post-hire inspections, identifying defects and completing the required documentation.
  • Deliver operator familiarisation and equipment handovers when required.
  • Maintain accurate service, inspection and repair records.
  • Ensure tools, parts and workshop areas are maintained in a safe, clean and organised condition.
  • Work closely with crane operators, rigging teams, hire controllers and the wider engineering department.
  • Follow all company health, safety, environmental and quality procedures.


Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience working as a crane engineer, plant engineer, heavy vehicle engineer or in a similar mechanical engineering role.
  • Have a strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Be confident in diagnosing faults using technical manuals, electrical schematics and diagnostic equipment.
  • Have experience working on crawler cranes, lifting equipment, heavy plant or similar machinery.
  • Be capable of working independently and as part of a team.
  • Have a practical, methodical and safety-conscious approach to their work.
  • Be willing to travel and work at locations across the UK.
  • Be flexible regarding working hours when responding to breakdowns or operational requirements.
  • Hold a full UK driving license.

Manufacturer-specific experience with Liebherr, Kobelco, Hitachi Sumitomo cranes would be advantageous, although additional training can be provided.
