Banking Lawyer

Obelisk Support is looking for a Banking Lawyer

Job description

About the Role

Our client, a state-owned economic development bank, is seeking a Banking Lawyer to cover parental leave in the Legal & Governance team – a fixed-term, in-house role reporting to an Associate Director. The work centres on debt and guarantee products: transactional, advisory and some project work.

Details

  • Start Date: 12 October 2026
  • Capacity: Full Time
  • Duration: 5 months
  • Location: Hybrid (2 days per week in the London or Sheffield office)

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Banking team on guarantee and structured debt products – reviewing, drafting and negotiating finance documentation, and advising on legal risk, governance and approvals for live transactions
  • Give practical, timely advice on day-to-day corporate, commercial and governance matters, flagging risks that need escalating
  • Keep legal documentation, processes and know-how up to date so the team can work efficiently and consistently
  • Instruct and manage external counsel where needed

Skills and Requirements

Essential:

  • Qualified lawyer in England & Wales (or an equivalent jurisdiction)
  • Banking/finance law experience – structured finance, securitisation or guarantees would be a strong fit
  • Solid technical legal skills and the ability to apply them in a practical, in-house setting
  • Comfortable managing transactions independently, with good judgement on when to escalate
  • Strong transaction management and negotiation skills
  • Broad commercial legal skills, including non-debt work

Desirable:

  • Experience working with or for central government, an economic development bank, or another public sector organisation
  • Financial services background, with some understanding of regulated activities and FCA permissions
