Design Manager

The Role
As Design Manager, you will be responsible for managing the design process from concept through to project completion. Working closely with clients, consultants, contractors, and internal teams, you will ensure that designs are coordinated, buildable, commercially viable, and aligned with project objectives.
You will play a key role in driving collaboration, mitigating risks, and ensuring that projects are delivered successfully through effective design leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the design process throughout the project lifecycle.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary design teams, consultants, and stakeholders.
- Develop and manage design programmes to support project delivery schedules.
- Ensure design information is produced, reviewed, and issued in accordance with project requirements.
- Identify and manage design risks, constraints, and opportunities.
- Facilitate design reviews, workshops, and coordination meetings.
- Ensure designs meet regulatory, statutory, and client requirements.
- Work closely with project and construction teams to ensure design solutions are practical and buildable.
- Manage design changes and oversee the resolution of technical issues.
- Promote innovation, quality, and continuous improvement throughout the design process.
About You
You are a proactive and highly organised professional with a passion for delivering high-quality projects through effective design management.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in a Design Manager position or a similar design leadership role.
- Experience managing design teams on construction, infrastructure, engineering, or built environment projects.
- Strong understanding of design management principles and project delivery processes.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Ability to coordinate multiple workstreams and meet challenging deadlines.
- Strong technical understanding of design development and coordination.
- Experience managing risk, quality, and compliance throughout the design process.
- Commercial awareness and strong problem-solving capabilities.
Desirable Qualifications
- Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
- Professional accreditation with a recognised industry body.
- Experience working within design-and-build environments.
- Knowledge of BIM processes and digital design tools.
- Understanding of planning, regulatory, and statutory approval processes.
