Telecommunications Design CRE – Operational Communications


Hybrid Working | London – 1 Day per Week

I'm working with a leading rail infrastructure business looking for an experienced Telecommunications Design CRE to provide technical leadership and assurance across Network Rail enhancement, renewal and multidisciplinary projects.


This is a senior technical role with a particular focus on Operational Communications, where you'll be responsible for ensuring telecoms designs are safe, compliant, constructible and delivered to the required Network Rail standards.


The Role:

• Act as the Design Contractor's Responsible Engineer (CRE) for telecommunications

• Provide technical leadership and engineering assurance throughout project delivery

• Lead the delivery of Operational Communications systems across enhancement and renewal projects

• Provide specialist expertise across SPT, GSM-R, FTN/FTNx, CUCM/Concentrator systems, operational telephony and station communications

• Manage technical interfaces between telecoms, signalling, E&P, civils, track and station systems

• Review and assure telecoms design deliverables for compliance, constructability and operational requirements

• Participate in IDC/IDRs, design reviews, HAZIDs, constructability and value engineering workshops

• Support testing, commissioning, integration and handback activities

• Identify, manage and mitigate engineering risks throughout project delivery

• Ensure compliance with Network Rail standards, Railway Group Standards, CDM and relevant legislation

• Liaise with Network Rail engineers, asset teams, project managers, designers and contractors

• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers

• Support the management of specialist subcontractors and suppliers

• Ensure engineering records, handback documentation and asset information are completed accurately


What You'll Need:

• Significant experience delivering railway telecommunications projects within the UK rail industry

• Demonstrable experience working as a CRE or Senior Telecommunications Engineer on Network Rail projects

• Extensive knowledge of Operational Communications systems and railway telecoms infrastructure

• Strong experience across FTN, FTNx, GSM-R, IP networking and transmission systems

• Experience working on resignalling, enhancement or renewal projects

• Proven experience delivering projects through the PACE lifecycle

• Strong understanding of testing, commissioning, integration and handback

• Experience managing engineering interfaces within complex multidisciplinary rail environments

• Good knowledge of Network Rail standards and telecoms specifications

• Understanding of railway construction methodologies and possession planning

• Strong understanding of CDM and railway safety requirements

• Degree, HNC, HND or equivalent qualification in Telecommunications, Electronic Engineering or a related discipline

• IEng/CEng or working towards professional registration

PTS certification or ability to obtain

• Full UK driving licence


Desirable Experience:

• Network Rail-approved CRE competence

IRSE licence or membership

• IET, IRSE or equivalent professional membership

• Experience with ETCS, digital railway or communications migration projects

• Station communications and customer information systems

• Knowledge of cyber security principles within operational telecommunications
